So my mum has been having a bunch of trouble with her phone and ADSL service. She has it sorted now after hours on the phone to Vodafone and a tech visiting her, but was recommended to get a master splitter installed to help prevent issues going forward.

Some background - House was built around 2002, she is in rural whangarei so stuck with copper for the foreseeable future. She has 3-4 phone jacks with filters on them and vodafone adsl. Mobile coverage is not reliable enough for her to go naked BB.

So - a few questions for the experts please...
Will a master splitter help?
She was told it needed to be installed by an electrician which I didn't believe... what is the truth?
If an electrician is not required is it something my wiring savvy husband could do? (he did all the cat5 data cabling in our extension)
Does anyone know of anyone who does these installs in whangarei area?

Hi, a master filter (if correctly installed) will ensure you get the optimum results. Currently you only have micro filters on each outlet, this will ensure that the POTs devices (phones) will not load the line, but it will not remove the effects of all the line stubs, only a master filter can achieve this.

A master filter install is normally done by a Chorus tech or a suitably trained data tech or electrician, most electricians dont understand the specfics of installing a filter so its best left to a data tech or Chorus.

Thanks Cyril. Can my mum contact Chorus directly to find someone to do this? Or does she need to go through her ISP - Vodafone. It doesn't sound like they offered her that option when they suggested she have one installed.
I assume there are independent data tech's as well then - I will ask google about the existence of these in whangarei :)

Any competent data cabling tech should be able to do this fairly easily - the most complex part is pulling the cable through to the right location. A lot of electricians aren't that knowledgeable in this area though, and there's been the odd photo on here of instals completed by electricians that make you cringe!

If your husband's OK with installing data cabling, then installing a master filter should be well within his capability.

You should be able to contact your ISP and log a fault with them saying you want a "Master Filter" or "Splitter" installed.

However if you can get Fraser aka CoffeeBaron to do the job then you will be in excellent hands as he does a brilliant job.

I would ask your ISP to "Run a Line Test in Chorus Service Performance Manager aka SPM for at least 2 hours if not 24 hours" and then they can provide you with the results. If you were with Spark then I could run a line test and then you would get pretty graphs like this. And then all the geeks on here can universally agree a Master Filter is required.

Normally this would go into the ISP specific forum, or the "Broadband" forum.
