Dudes

I would like to monitor the amount of data that comes in to my router and see how much of it is used by my house mates and how much by me. The logs from the router (3com office connect) don't seem to be any use

so basically im after a free bit of software which shows me IP\MAC Adress\ machine name (anything which identifies the particular machine) and how much data has been sent to them and uploaded from them.

We are 15 Gig over the quota for the month and I cant show who has used it all!!

I found ones that run on each machine and measure bandwidth use but I want one which monitors from the router and is also free, any used anything like that before? We have a limit of 25 GB per month and we have used 40!! someones been putting a lot of effort in to their downloads!!

Cheers

Clarkconnect gateway on a cruddy old PIII 500MHz with 128MB RAM and two cheap+nasty network cards will do the trick.

If you dont want to load software on each PC, then a gateway machine of some sort is your only real option, and this is cheaper than buying a new ADSL router...

You mean like a proxy server?

seems a little elaborate for what I am trying to achieve mate

All I want to be able to see is which machine is using what amount of bandwidth

Thanks for the response

Clarkconnect takes like, 15 mins to install and about 15 mins to set up, all menu driven. Very easy.

Unless you have one of the following, you are not going to be able to get visibility on the usage:

Router that can log it (sounds like yours cant)
Software on each PC
Device that can measure data, and all traffic is forced through it (proxy)

Clarkconnect runs happily in Microsoft Virtual PC, so you could run it on your desktop, incur zero extra cost, and simply point the client PCs at the clarkconnect VM for their gateway.

Netflow is a good solution otherwise, here is a link to someone who got it installed in their router

Don't think the 3coms run linux under the hood tho...
