I've been using Orcon for over a year now and during the last few months things are becoming rather frustrating.  Towards the end of the month, International speeds start to take a steep nose dive.  Currently, on a test to a NY speedtest.net server I can't download faster then 500kbps and that's the fastest international speed - other countries are all below 300 (including Australia).  National downloads are fine however, I can download at around 2000kbps.

I guess I'm at the point where I'm tired of trying to get Orcon to do something.  What would be a recommended ISP that has good international speeds?  I'm in Christchurch (but sadly out of Telstra's cable zone), if that's any help.

Not ihug that's for sure, you will be lucky to break 300kbps to anywhere international, lots of packet loss too.

No, Auckland and Australia are fine but UK and USA are not, so it's not my phone line or exchange but rather ihug's poor international connectivity.

Testing Speedtests from overseas using speedtest.net are not very good. Due to the tests being TCP and the latency between NZ and the USA.

If you have a 10M link say with WinXP, increasing the Latency will decrease the Speed of TCP Data you can get over it.

Its why people use multidownload programs as multiple tcp connection will download faster than a single TCP stream.

Thanks

Well normally I get about 1500-2000kbps for international traffic, just at this time of the months it drops to what it is currently.  The drop is noticeable in more then just download speeds.  Gaming has been badly affected, as has Ventrilo.  From the looks of things, TelstraClear has pretty good international traffic, so I might see about hopping over to them.

For a very long time I couldn't say anything but good things about Orcons service. Several months ago I started getting upwards to 1000 disconnections per week. It wasn't an issue with my router, i tried three different ones and had lines replaced. It took them two weeks to admit there was a problem and then suddenly it was fixed but they wouldn't say what was wrong.

All was fine again for a while, back to get fullspeed downloads which I was stoked with but then two weeks ago the disconnections started again and a lot of the time ADSL is still synced but there is no traffic at all. Rung Orcon many times, hung up after being on hold for more than an hour a few times. When I finally get through they say there is no problem and refuse to do anything to resolve the problem even though it gets to the point where the internet is just unusable.

Time to switch back to xtra! I'm sick of being messed around.

I gave up on Orcon along time ago and I'm just waiting for another option to come along so I can switch. week long repies to emails, 30-40 minute hold times to be told there is nothing wrong.

Yell..hi there, problems with " orcon" ??? hmmm, i agree with a prevous
comment about " FORGET ihug ". avoid IHUG if at all possible , because
thier LACK OF SERVICE excedes any service that they once had in the past.
ALSO. ihug actively BLOCKS all " smtp " access, send/reply thru' their system, which
makes it very difficult to use your e-mail service if you are overseas.
ihug denies this practice, BUT,,, they are on a list of KNOWN smtp Blockers.
I have been a customer since around 1994'ish and am going to look for another
NZ isp, poss'y "woosh " or similar.
cheers from grumpy...Wink

I've noticed the exact same thing...
International in the last month or two with Orcon has taken a HUGE dive!
I can sometimes only get 256kbps Internationally!
and I sync between 7 and 8Mbps nationally

Switched to Telstra and things are so much better :)  No lag anymore in games or on Ventrilo and downloads are speedy all hours of the day.

Greeting's all,any good alternatives for a  better servise " i.s.p. or EMAIL service" will appreciated
by us all. Many of the " isp's " now day's seem to be so pre occupied with
shutting the doors on Spam, they are making their sites almost un useable for normal day to day users...
The current growing problem seems to be " S.M.T.P. e-mail blocking on " reply to/forward" mode..
Any suggestions out there will be gladly received.
cheers from " grumpy "...Laughing

How is this related to Orcon? If not, please open another discussion.

Got the same issue here, fo me it's fine when I get home at 4:30-5pm but by 8pm at night it's poo. It's almost like they're throttling back the line, as pings don't seemed to be affected, but any downloads or gaming (outside NZ) is seriously burnt.

I'd love to go back to Telstra, but my landlord won't let them install the cable, as he's worried they'll tack it to the side of the flat. :(
