So, I finally got fibre this year. After some positive feedback from here on Geekzone and a good offer of $10 off per month from the Full Flavour Geekzone rep last year, I chose Full Flavour as my new ISP. I was very interested in the included Roku Streaming Stick and seamless behind the scenes handling of DNS tweaks to access US services like Netflix US and Hulu.

Well, the Roku and US streaming service access in general worked great - better than I expected, with no need for manual fiddling with settings as one would with VPN. I subscribed to US Netflix (as well as using a bunch of other ad-supported or free US only streaming services), and figured I was set. No more need for local TV access, and most of my TV and movies could now be sourced 100% legit :-)

Until today when with NZ Netflix released, Full Flavour inexplicably (to my way of thinking) dropped US Netflix support. I discovered this when I logged to Netflix tonight and suddenly my watchlist and choices have shrunk to next to nothing! :-( Ok, I enquire via twitter and FF confirm US Netflix support is gone!

I'm now trialing unotelly's DNS service to get US Netflix access back, but that really stinks (not unotelly, but the repercussions of FF's actions). A) I'll now have to pay a third party a monthly fee of around 4 - 5 USD for what I was getting included with my FF fibre plan yesterday. B) I cannot get the unotelly DNS servers to work on the Full Flavour supplied Huawei HG253s V2 router, despite having been granted admin access by a FF support rep (I needed to set some custom WiFi networking stuff when I got it).

Thus most of the NZD $10 I though I was saving as part of the deal offered to me here, will now go on a third party unblocking DNS service, and unless I can figure out why this router isn't passing on manual DNS to other devices (they still see the previous FF ones), I'll not be able to watch US Netflix on my Roku or other devices lacking their own DNS settings.

I realise this isn't the end of the world, but I'm pretty unhappy part of what sold me on FF's service is now messed up. Hell, FF, you knew your customers like me were using US Netflix - you promoted access on your site and gave customers like me free Roku Sticks for a year (regardless of what happens, I'm sold on the Roku and will be getting my own US import if FF doesn't sell me one after the year). I think it's really rather poor that you'd suddenly pull the rug out from under our feet. NZ Netflix is a joke - you had to have known it was no reasonable substitute!

Frankly unless I'm misunderstanding the situation and you can selectively turn US Netflix access back on as I believe other ISPs like Orcon can, I feel I'll be exploring every possible option to escape my contract with FF ASAP. If I'm stuck with them for 12 months (is that right? Cause I got the fibre install for free), and nothing changes, it's a safe bet I'll be jumping ship first thing in early 2016.

Every big to medium sized ISP I've been with in the past has always notified me about important changes via email, and certainly never sold me on a deal and services that they then yanked away a couple months later. I know FF is smaller and this is my first time with a little local ISP since Palmerston North's Inspire.net.nz back in '99 (before they went national and were bought by a bigger ISP), but I still expected to be treated better.

If anyone has any help with setting up unotelly DNS on the HG253s V2 router, please let me know! It is completely ignoring my manual DNS input. Yes - I saved, I rebooted the router, too.

Well, it took most of the night, but I finally got manual DNS working with Unotelly servers on the Huawei HG253s V2 router, so I've US Netflix back on my Roku and other devices. So I'm feeling a lot better about the matter, this morning. That said - the day before yesterday I was a happy customer with zero ISP-related worries. I can't say that now. But I'm not as annoyed as I was, so that's something.

I did try editing it twice. Line breaks were ignored as I said. I didn't forget them. The Geekzone post editor is defective.

Hi Jamie,

We've partnered with Netflix in their OpenConnect program and are officially endorsing the New Zealand service. It's fantastic to be hosting your favourite shows locally from Tauranga and the program is essential for paving the way for 4k uptake.

Unfortunately we don't use the GlobalMode product made by Bypass and don't have access to a feature equivalent to the region switcher that you've seen pop-up with Slingshot.

We're collating feedback on the change and depending on customer feedback, will look at what options we can make available to you.

Well, I've subbed to Unotelly since it seems popular here and I might as well give it a full 30 days of trial. So that is now an extra NZD$6.83 per month (at least with the current exchange rate) to get what I already had as part of my ISP's package only two days ago.

If you signed a 12 month contract for a service from FF are they allowed to take away something from that service without some compensation?

That is what I'd like to know. It's not a huge deal now I've got the annoyingly obtuse FF supplied router working with Unotelly DNS. But the lack of contact about these changes to their service is disappointing. I'd have expected an email at least. Just suddenly finding stuff isn't working right is not great customer service, IMO.

I suppose things could be worse - I note FF have switched to giving customers a free Chromecast stick instead of the better Roku Streaming stick. Having to unlock and launch an app on my iOS (I assume the Google Chromecast iOS app I see is also a remote?) or Android device just to turn the volume up, pause playback, etc, really sucks. The Roku's included remote makes this an awful lot better, and all the reviews I've read online agree with me on this point. Why switch from a better product to a worse one? *baffled* Glad I got my Roku when I had the chance. I'll be buying my own, I like it so much!

Good thing I got the $10 off Geekzone special on FF. It's now paying for the features FF is dropping. And check out these tweets of theirs:

"Roku unaffected, Hulu and other previously supported services unaffected for now." [To which I worriedly asked what 'now' means]

"while it works, it works. Hulu uptake amongst our customers is very low so it may be difficult for us to invest further in"
"…DNS "magic" services."

I feel like FF is going to flake out on even more of their DNS setups to enable access to US services. I know it's ten months into the future, but I'm already wondering what ISP I ought to move too. It will be interesting to see what develops over these next ten months of my 12 month contract. If my contract ended today, I know I would not be staying with FF.

There is a 25% geekzone discount for unotelly and you can pay annually, doing both means you'll pay a little over half of what you are currently oaying for unotelly.

Alternatively you can use dns4me which is even cheaper.

Well, I'll try out dns4me after my month of Unotelly runs out, thanks. It's certainly cheaper. Not a lesser service for it?

Another followup - much happier this morning with how everything's playing out. FF gave me a phone call and I now understand the rationale behind their decisions a bit better. As I said to them, mainly I was just ticked off cause my night (after a hard day preceding it) of planned Netflix binging was flushed down the toilet by having to try third party DNS geo unblockers, and trying to figure out where in the hell the DNS settings went in the supplied Huawei router (it turned out in LAN settings, not WAN! Setting them in WAN made zero difference - the router still passed along the FF DNS to other devices).

So yeah - happier today, pleased to discover from said phone call that my supplied Roku stick will be available for me to buy after 12 months, and the Chromecast was more of a temporary 'fallback' measure just in case FF removing their US Netflix DNS setup and stopping blocking of google DNS on FF's side caused the Roku to stop working properly (it still worked, as it happens).

I was somewhat harsh above, and I'm not thrilled I now rely on and pay for a third party DNS geo unblocking service. However given things are mostly working out, and truth be told I'm finding Unotelly quite cool (especially the easy switching of regions - very handy!); I think I can safely say so long as there are no further upsets - I will remain a customer.

The FF rep on the phone did mention the possibility of integrating a DNS geo unlocker like Unotelly into their service. I gather that would then easily give FF customers the choice of geo unlocking (and much greater choice than FF's own one size fits all geo unlocking), and remove the burden of support for keeping geo unlocking working from FF. I reckon, from my limited customer perspective, that is a good idea.

On final thought - while I take onboard the rep's thinking that FF didn't want to unnecessarily worry customers by advising them of changes to their geo unlocking and potential impact on the Roku, it was this lack of communication that mainly led to me getting ticked off two nights ago. Perhaps FF could have an opt-in mailing list for the more technical matters that arise. I don't know. Them contacting me today and earlier here on Geekzone and via twitter, did a lot to make me feel better and understand their perspective. But some prior contact could have avoided almost all of my earlier bad feelings and expression of said bad feelings online :-)
