As the title says.

Who decides which suburbs get fibre ? chorus or someone national.

I'm just a bit curious as to why my suburb has waited 2 years to get connected compared to the suburb to my north, east and south (Dunedin).

Schools & business, then it from there. It's a ten year plan and someone has to be last.

Ultimately, it's the government through Crown Fibre Holdings that determines the schedule of the rollout.

Chorus is merely one of the contractors who bid for the work.

Yes I realise this.

Its not a moan, I'm accepting of my current arrangement.

With my ASDL2 I can VPN to my other house in San Fran and watch Netflix at 5.1 as is. Not like I live in Outram.

More a curiosity question about the process on how they decide which bits get done before others.

My suburb/exchange was one of the first in Dunedin to be VDLS enabled and I was curious as to why the fibre cable stopped 300m away along the street in both directions.

According to the Chorus map my area includes a high school, several doctors surgeries and the major private hospital but no fibre unlike the next one which does have fibre but no schools or doctors surgeries etc.

Hey it might just be that since we got VDSL very early they thought we could wait longer for fibre.

(Another poster said it was crown fibre holdings that decided)

you do realise that the entirety of Dunedin is a business fibre area, and the likes of the school, hospital and possibly some of those private business's already have fibre.

your looking at the residentual UFB rollout, your forgetting there is the business network out there already.

Yes I'm sure there are plenty of reasons why decisions get made, I'm just curious as to what the process is.

If its, "all the dr and schools in this suburb/exchange already have business fibre so we wont push to rollout UFB to the residents nearby", then OK thats the system how they prioritise things.

If its, the ground is solid rock here and digging down is a nightmare so we are waiting for council to allow overheads etc then ok too
ie students areas all flat and were covered along time ago compared with the hill suburbs.

As I said in my original post I was just curious as to how they decide.

OP is saying he is living between two streets that has UFB, and everything else 360 degrees around him has UFB. someone must have stuffed up!

i doubt many if any people on here will be able to tell you as its probably commercially sensitive.

i know its something that would be nice to know, im not due till 2019, but because we can get VDSL im not too worried.

i just dont think its something you are going to get an answer to

Im in a similar situation. Except not with UFB. In my case it is with Piped gas. Where I live in Auckland - no piped gas but I can travel in any direction from my house. And I will end up somewhere that does have gas available. And there are no plans to extend the gas network. Vector have little incentive to do so. As they own the power network as well. As more gas usage means less power usage.

There's a smallish area in Milford that appears to have been bypassed by both VDSL and fibre. If I move a street or so over I can get both, so yes it is interesting how they're rolling stuff out :-)

The funny thing is there is a park just down the road that is covered but no houses there ;-) A shame I can't use the business fibre that seems to cover our street.

I read suburb not street.

Bit of an article on the outram thing here too, much as GZ loves to take the piss. http://digital.thestar.co.nz/Olive/ODE/STR_Daily/LandingPage/LandingPage.aspx?href=U1RSLzIwMTUvMDQvMTY.&pageno=MQ..&entity=QXIwMDEwNg..&view=ZW50aXR5

Which street is that? (curious as I used to live in the area).

Warrington can be removed from that article above .I got it sorted last year, confirmation from GL came though back in December . VDSL is now live in my local community of Warrington , 40/10Mbit/s  . Everyone is very happen with the outcome , cheers Chorus .
