Ok it's just a theoretical question I am not actually going to get rid of my broadband connection.

I am currently with Slingshot UFB (broadband + phone)

I understand fibre installation is a one way street and I can't go back to copper anymore (although the line is still there.)

What if I sell the house and new owner only wants a landline? Can Slingshot (or any telco in that matter) deliver VOIP only over fibre?

There is a Voice over Fibre product out there delivered through the ONT however I am not sure who actually offers this (maybe WXC?)

Fibre is not a one way street and assuming it wasn't removed as part of the UFB install (which you've said is the case) it's no different to get than reconnected than any other premises in NZ.

pretty sure as long as you still have the copper there you can still use it for a connection

Copper might be damaged during the fibre installation (the line is quite old and Chorus tried to use blow fibre through in the same conduit)

So if we go back to copper and find the line is no longer working, Chorus is going to come back and fix it?

MR does their voip product through the ONT but I don't think it is standalone, rather bundled with the ufb product.

Ahh, I didn't notice the "only" in the first post.

Voice over fibre can be ordered and delivered over the ont without broadband uni port enabled. I suspect soonish it would be available from someone else not MR. As a pure VoF offering.

Is there not some regulated product for Voice (only) over fibre? Ultimately fibre is replacement for copper, and already there are some fibre only subdivisions, so this will become more common in future. There will be some people who don't want broadband, only phone.

IMO fiber install should be a one way street, no going back. No new copper installs in fiber areas. Taxpayers have paid enough for the network and its absurd to not use it.

IMO fiber install should be a one way street, no going back. No new copper installs in fiber areas. Taxpayers have paid enough for the network and its absurd to not use it.

I agree there are alternatives for phone only, but as a phone line is still considered an "essential service", then surely there must be a regulated product for phone only over fibre??

Perhaps it is time that a phone line was no longer an essential service? That was an idea from an era before cheap prepaid mobiles were a thing.

Chorus offer voice via ONT ports. If noone wants to resell it perhaps that shows what the market for that is like.

Anyone got the stats for how many houses buy a landline only now days? Must be pretty low other than rural people who can't get xDSL on their line.

In a disaster would you be able to call 111 from a VoF service vs a copper service?

I see it assumed a lot that the copper service would stay up in a disaster. Maybe I'm missing something but it's just as likely to fail as UFB isn't it?. You need power at the end point but other than that, how is it really any different.

I think the power requirement is the main (only?) reason given for fibre being "less reliable".
