I've noticed that the disclaimers made by ISP's with regard to passing on potential connection charges are getting more vague and applying a wider range of possible charges.

I am moving again and received this from Farmside:

In regards to the Relocation you need to be aware of the following:

Homeline Relocation;

You understand the cost of your homeline relocation is $45+GST. The standard lead time for relocation is 5-7 working says from when the request is submitted, although this is dependant on the availability of Chorus Technicians and network availabilities. Chorus may charge a network connection fee of up to $225+GST. This is a contirbution to be connected to the Chorus network; unfortunately Farmside is unable to determine whether you will incur this fee. You understand we are unable to guarantee you will retain our current phone number due to possible changes to the exchange or switch.

ADSL Relocation:

You understand that there is a one off connection fee for the relocation of your Fixed Line service. This fee will range from $15.86+GST to $169.73+GST dependant on the work required to connect this service to your line. You are required to take your ADSL modem and line fiters with you to the new address. The standard lead time for relocation is 5-7 working days from when the request is submitted, although this is dependant on the availability of Chorus Technicians and network availabilities.

I have reasonable knowledge of what needs to be done to connect and am 99% sure that I will not incur any extra charges above the $45 relocation that Farmside say they have to charge because Chorus charge them (which I think is BS anyway, I've had new connections for free in the past), but the lack of clarity in a modern and competitive consumer environment is a but weak, isn't it?

I'll point out the current tenants have ADSL broadband and a home line already connected.

Last time I got connected Chorus charged Farmside in error (some $150 odd for internal wiring when they only visited the house because the tech had connected the wrong pair at the cabinet, i.e. not an internal wiring issue) and Farmside refused to credit me until Chorus investigated, admitted the error and credited them. So I am naturally wary of accepting blanket disclaimers that could see me liable for $450.

Seriously considering the early termination fee and going with someone else.

Wouldn't hurt Farmside to run a spell-check over their cut and paste disclaimers either.

Vented.
