Hi I'm pretty keen to rewire my ground level granny flat because our VDSL performance doesn't seem great for our location in relation the exchange.

Our 4 wire cable runs into the roof into another apartment, but I can see the buildings cabling run into one of these telecom points (I stole this photo from Yabanize's post so you can see what ours looks like) - our one is butted up against our apartment and its cables run from ground, connect to the apartments lines which run into a hole in the wall) so I figure this is probably what I should consider my ETP.

Replacing our 4 wire cable is going to be a huge hassle because it runs into the roof and into another apartment, because it's a rental I also don't want to mess with replacing it - I was just hoping to connect a Cat5e cable from this Telecom box around the outside of the apartment into our aerial cable hole which is a great location (which is all private and fenced off from public and other apartment users), then connect that to our VDSL master filter. This means it doesn't involve messing with the existing cabling, and means I can easily return it to original when we vacate

Problem is that I will need to find what pair belongs to our apartment, will this work? http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/other/auction-930355275.htm

Will doing this get me in trouble with Chorus? I'll use jelly clips for connecting the wires, but I do plan to run our cat5 cable around the outside of the apartment for about 10m.

Don't touch it. No one will want you to put in a temporary cable like that. Either have it replaced professionally by Chorus or don't touch it. Because it is a rental, I'd just leave it alone.

There is nothing inside those grey pillars that a homeowner needs to be touching. Constant removal of the pillar caps by inquisitive residents results in loose fitting seals, allowing ingress of dust & moisture - impacting service performance.
Do not interfere with, attempt to modify or reconfigure any part of the Chorus network.

If you don't know what you are doing you will likely cause more trouble - resulting in more cost to you - by making ill-informed changes to your home wiring. You may also inadvertently interfere with your neighbour's service - so just don't touch it.

If you are renting and you believe that the internal wiring of your flat is impacting on your broadband performance then ask your landlord to get Chorus to install a master splitter & dedicated broadband jackpoint.

Alternatively call in a qualified installer (there are a couple recommended in these forum discussions), to do this work for you.

Do not interfere with, attempt to modify or reconfigure any part of the Chorus network.

It covers faults. The user stated the the service is working - just not as fast as they would like it to be. There is no apparent fault.

but a service that isn't working as expected could be viewed as a fault on the system somewhere.

Just because its working does not mean its working to specification. And there for a fault and there for covered wouldn't you say?

Just because its working does not mean its working to specification. And there for a fault and there for covered wouldn't you say?

Flatmate got pinged $150 for nothing happening when chorus came out because his upstream went from 10 to 4.something on VSDL. hes now looking for a house. Thanks chorus for costing me a flatmate.

Real estate agents ignorance about internet means I should have flatmates for a while longer.

"they have internet in the house now" - Is it adsl or vdsl or fiber? Oh they have broadband.,

Basically we have 30/10 but It should sit at about 45/10. We're about a year off fibre so its not worth it for me to get the wiring done because the lease is for one year.

Because the layout of my apartment I don't have an ETP.

I'm going to run the cat5 cable to my VDSL jack and see if things improve. If they don't then I'll set it back to original.

I'm not going to damage anything and Im going to use the right tools for the job.

Don't touch anything inside that pillar. It is not yours.

If you stuff something up and someone else loses connectivity, you will be the one paying for Chorus techs to come and fix it.

Nothing wrong with 30/10 by the way.

yeah just patch in behind the first jack, remember not to create a bad join as this will increase the noise floor and the dsl will have to re-sync and re-send packets more often, therefore reducing your line speed.
At this point it may pay to PHOTOGRAPH each jack-point if your not too savvy with the wiring layout, (If someone is a rookie and not using industry standard wiring) just to save your ass. and go check and re-terminate any other jacks, cable joins, and see if you can reduce line noise any further. Remember chorus will gladly take your money for doing about the same i have explained, less re-cabling everything.

another thing try line speed with only the dsl modem on the line, then plug everything else in and see if there is induced line noise from extra devices plugged and try the line speed thing again,. if so unplug something until you find a culprit. you may need to allow for the line snr to re-calibrate if it is only a periodic thing.

Trust me - you don't want to muck around with pillars. I've seen qualified technicians accidentally cause faults because they jostled a pair that looked fine. It's just not worth the risk, and don't quote me on this but I believe that what you intend to do would be classified as tampering with the Chorus Network, which can carry some hefty penalties, as well as risking the obvious termination of service.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

Would expect there to be something against interfering with a core network service but its probably never been prosecuted for.

As for what the OP should do, Do not open the grey pillar or touch any of the cables running up and down the street.

However anything you want to do with the lead into your property once it exits the pillar is up to you and any problems arise is down to you and your own stupidity, You are the one that will be charged heavily for any required repairs otherwise it will be left in the condition it is found in and you charged a callout fee.
