Hi there, Well im pretty new to the geekzone website and i have a question regarding broadband in New Zealand.

There may already be a sticky for this somewhere (I havent searched) but i was wondering, what company in New zealand offers the best BROADBAND speed with a max of $100 a month to spend on it?

I currently have Xtra Go Large (i think thats what it is called im not completely sure - the "unlimted" plan) But i am not getting any decent speeds even in the off peak hours, so i decided its time for a change and why not get it for myself over the Christmas break :)

I was Speaking to a mate of mine last night - around 10pm and he was downloading at 220Kb/s - he said that was slow and he can reach up to 1000KB. I could only dream of those speeds because i rarely get them even in the off peak hours :(. My mate said he was paying $102 a month (includes phone line) on telstra so i went there and had a look. But i was wondering if anyone knew of anything better?

TelstraClear's cable broadband is regarded by many people as the best consumer grade connection you will get in NZ. The only issue is that you can only sign up if you're in a TCL coverage area which includes the Kapiti Coast, Wellington, most of the Hutt Valley and parts of Christchurch.

$99 gets you a 10Mbps / 2Mbps service with 40GB of traffic. It does not include a PSTN line for that price and there is no requirement to have a phoneline with TCL cable.

Just something i forgot to put in.. On peak hours i dont get speeds greater than 10 kb/s and on my off peak hours i dont get speeds greater than (Well earlier this morning i was downloading at 5 kb/s MAX) around 150 ish that was the highest ive really had keeping stable not jumping to 300 then down to 80 etc. Very sad connection i know considering its meant to be max!

Well, you are definitely not alone there. Many Go Large users have reported similar experiences here:

However, having said that, there are some people on Geekzone who are happy with this plan.

Sbiddle: No problem about where i live cause i live in Wellington :). What does PSTN mean mate? Also are you saying that if i get cable broadband with telstraclear, i DONT have to get a phone line with them aswell?

Grant: Once again thanks for another link its added to my favourites. I just read that some guy wasnt even downloading pass 10 Kb/s and was looking for a change - so hes got the same prob as me :(

PSTN is a regular phoneline. You don't need to get a phoneline to be with TCL and can get the 10Mbps/2Mbps 20GB plan for $69 without a phoneline. If you wanted you could then get a VoIP line which only costs $11.25 from VFX.

Getting a VOIP line from VFX means you can port your existing number to VFX and ditch your current Telecom landline, saving you the money you pay monthly to Telecom, making the deal even better - the savings will help pay a even bigger allowance on TCL.

Steve answered you as to what it is, but in case you care, PSTN = Public Switched Telephone Network.

By the way, if you want any two of:

(Digital) Cable TV
Cable Internet
A standard phone line

then TelstraClear usually have a bundle that gives you all three for (approximately) the cost of any two.

pity there’s no cable in Whitby, just misses us. i liked wired country which operated in the Waikato, mainly Hamilton. Wireless if you were in sight of the hospital. 2Mbs dwn and 1 up but ran approx 8 down and 8 up. pity they don’t offer that any more to residential, only business now. If u live in Hams i may be able to get you connected even if your residential, pm me and ill see what i can do.

NOTE to mods: you need a spell check on here, borred of the cut/paste from word :)

ALSO: good work BarTender and Cokemaster on ya web. Cokemaster, you wouldent happen to be ImCokeMan by any chance?
