Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone has ever tried running their UFB fibre directly into an SFP on their own router and bypassing their ONT altogether.

Fibre is coming soon and my router is up in the ceiling - to keep things simple I'd like to fibre run directly up there but powering the ONT would be a pain. I do have other alternatives but the ideal would be to get the right SFP and work out the settings for the handover - I've checked with my provider and I can get my IP and gateway details beforehand.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

What does SPF stand for? I doubt you'll be allowed to do this, the fiber and ONT are part of the Chorus network and I doubt they like people messing with it. Use a double adapter for power.

Off the top of my head, I don't think there are any SFPs that support a connection through a splitter - as far as I'm aware, they're only meant for straight connections. Also, the ONTs and OLTs are programmed with the NOC, so that only authenticated ONTs can be connected to the OLT.

If you want something like that, you're talking about business grade dark fiber.

Its not Ethernet, you can not connect an Ethernet SFP to the fiber, sorry square peg, round hole. Its GPON. (google is your friend)

You would need to find a SFP module that supports GPON before you could even consider what you want to do. And even then no fibre company would allow you to on a UFB plan. You would need to get point to point fibre. Which you can get in Chorus fibre areas. But it would be very expensive both to install and in ongoing fees. Due to no govt subsidies and dedicated bandwidth required.

Just run some cat6 between the ONT and your router. There are lots of threads on here that say how to get Internet working without using the ISP supplied router. And the ONT ports are gigabit as well.

As post above says, can you put the ONT in a location like the garage and connect to router in the ceiling with Cat6 cable?

I had an install with a similar setup.   The free install is officially only up to the ONT location, additional cabling may be extra if you can't do it yourself.

Not possible. End of story.

While GPON is a standard the ONT is an integral part of the network and is heavily integrated with the OLT.

Chorus / your LFC aren't going to install the ONT where there is no power (and aren't going to install into a ceiling space either).

Not today.
Had a meeting with Chorus a few weeks ago and something is in the pipeline.

I highly recommend you build your own GPON network with 200k customers running on it... then let us know how supporting anything other than your own supplied ONT works out.

An ONT is so much more than a Fibre connection and a Ethernet port at the other.

who said anything about supporting it? the question was whether it was possible - i am well aware of the challenges, encryption being the main one.

Quick and easy answer is no, it isn't possible with a traditional UFB connection.

Cool thanks everyone good to know. The other alternative is to put the ONT in the cupboard and use existing cabling to get to the router in the ceiling. I was just hoping to keep everything nice and tidy but I guess I'm stuck with that one! Also means I've got to get a powerpoint installed in the cupboard too. Cheers.
