best for what?

Without telling us what you want from an ISP, we can't really recomend one.

how would you rate the following items on importance:

consistent speeds at peak time
responsive customer service
geekzone prescence (always good to get an ISP that uses geekzone. can help resolve thorny issues a lot better than ones who ignore it)
price
extra things (like VOD subscriptions some ISPs give away)
'free' modem.
landline

I suggest you check out the various ISPs plans, see what you like,  then check out places like their facebook page or twitter.  see what their customers say about them and, where there are bad experiences (there will always be some, no matter how good the ISP) how well do they respond to those experiences.

The number 42 is, in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, "The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything", calculated by an enormous supercomputer over a period of 7.5 million years.
Unfortunately, no one knows what the question is.

Can you be more specific about what your requirements are?

Trustpower, if you wish to deal with actual New Zealanders at the call centre in Tauranga. Their service never fails!

Things to add to that list:
IPv6 - do you need an ISP that supports IPv6?
Discounts for having an on account cellphone with the same ISP?
Do you need an ISP that doesn't use caching?
Is an ISP that uses CGNAT ok? some of the cheaper ones use CGNAT. Or do you need a real IP address? (public IP address)

And finally - What area do you live in? As there may be an awesome local ISP that only covers your area.

How about if you need to cancel? What are the penalties for doing so?

I just moved to voyager and very pleased. And such a great price if your comfortable with a two year contract. Even if you leave at a year it's cheaper to do that and pay the fee at 13 months. Was with snap before that and didn't like 2degrees new offerings.

Why are you leaving Spark? That's useful info for anyone doing a recommendation.

Spark sucked me in with a $75 credit and free national calling for 12 months...  The sales guy at the time said I could just call the retention team to extend the national calling free for another 12 months.  I contacted Spark a few weeks ago and the answer was just no.  So its back to Orcon I go!  Their new white modem looks good and we get the national calls for free and a cheaper price than spark! :)

Change over is today and I'm very impressed with the Orcon customer service so far.

So I would recommend Orcon if you still need a home line to make toll calls - we have friends around the country that dont have unlimited internet otherwise we would communicate with Skype or similar.

There are just so many different use cases for Internet providers, so I don't believe there really is one "best" ISP for everyone...

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

This guy posted one very short question with spelling errors.

Got a ton of replies and never responded.

Perhaps it is unnecessary to continue this thread :)
