We living in Drury and our plan is coming to an end. I have now woosh unlimited. I'm a very heavy user (70g /month)

Now looking for a good alternative.
Wireless or adsl ?

please your input what is wise to choose.

Not sure if ADSL would be good for you, as rural districts have far lower exchange density.

Wireless on the other hand seems to be popular in rural areas. Like Wired Country. You may also look at the list of Wireless plans at NZ Connections and check if they can cover over Drury.

errr... why not just get your line checked for ADSL, many ISP's have a line checker... or contact them directly? Some rural areas actually have ADSL enable cabinets (thanks to the School initiative with Telecom and the Govern'mnt)... u never know?

We have checked our lines several times in the past, but not satisfied with the help from woosh and the excuses A lot work and it was just that they were not really happy with me as a customer. I had a plan with unlimited use and sometimes 90g per month. That was not a good custumer for woosh I think. They now try to get me in some plan but it cost me four times as much.

Because the plans ends this month I have the opportunity to choose and look around. But I see so many providers and because of my heavy usage I don't know which one is good.

On the other hand you hear a lot about wireless, but it's a bit unknown.

So that's why I ask your imput, youre experienced and maybe now what a whise decsision is.

It's a simple answer.

Can get ADSL? Then get it. Cheap, fast, but sometimes not stable over long lines (which is why wireless is sometimes chosen instead).

Otherwise Wireless or Satellite. Cable or Fibre is either not going to be there or is expensive.
Wireless is OK in terms of speed/price ratio (shopping around required) and Satellite is pretty expensive for it's speed/price ratio.

u do use quite a bit of data... so not sure what to say as I am not sure what your budget is..... Xnet have a handy wee tool for calculating your desired options.... so does your area have ADSL?

My order:

Xnet/WxC
TelstraClear
WorldNet

Xnet have the best service and pretty darn good value.

TelstraClear requires you to also have their tolls (and home phone line) with them, and it costs $48.61 unless you call at least $20 with them (although you can get Big Back Yard, good for calling in the Wider Auckland Region)

WorldNet... don't know much about them. If you want plan flexibility, you can also choose Orcon.

I have used all of the above ISPs and would rate them in the following order for quality of connection:

1) WorldxChange / Xnet (BEST)
2) TelstraClear (OK)
3) WorldNet (Poor Bandwidth / Poor Service)

Whichever ISP you go with, none of them have flat plans any more unless you want to pay a LOT of money (e.g. Actrix with their $596 Broadband Elite plan) or face some restrictions (e.g. Orcon with their ZeroShock plan).

If you decide to go with Xnet, it will cost between $120 and $140 per month for 90GB as per the calculator here:

There are some options for you to consider.

I really don't think you will find an affordable Wireless or Satellite plan given your extremely high usage of 90GB per month.

He manages to use 70GB... I only use around 15GB myself.

70GB is around $100 on Xnet and TelstraClear.

EDIT: Also, Xnet is a pay-for-what-you-use service. So if you don't use up that 70GB, then you don't pay for the extra.

I was working on the above statement as being the worst case (and hence the most expensive), rather than 70GB as stated at the beginning of this thread.

But I'm using now about 70g per month and did in the past some more. It is just that I donwload a lot (movies with dutch subtitles)

Xnet would be great for those 'unexpected' overages.

You could make a 100GB plan, then only pay for the 70GB (or sometimes 90GB) that you use. That way you definitely don't pay more than around $140, but you still get some freedom (and savings!)

Slingshot also offers cheaper or non existant support too.

I wouldn't recommend going with them at all.
