Hey all,

 

I live in Central Auckland and planning to move service provider from Spark to 2Degrees broadband with home phone.

 

So far I have not heard any negative reviews or feedback about 2D broadband when I search this online.

 

I just want to hear from anyone who has jumped to 2D and how is it going so far? My OOKLA results from Spark is getting worse every day today  were [6mbps download / 0.34mbps upload at 30-38 ms ping] . Even had 3-4mbps in most days... and upload never goes above 1mbps..ever!!! I am still on ADSL as VDSL is not available in our area yet..nor the fiber..

 

Would appreciate any heads up or anything I should watch out for before I move or should I move at all?

Speed will not change you will be connected to the same hardware over the same copper line to the same house wiring

Are you testing over WiFi?

If fibre is still a while away, you could try getting a master splitter installed by an electrician, it may help https://www.spark.co.nz/help/internet-data/plans-services/splitters/

If you don't have a master splitter, you could talk to Geekzone member @coffeebaron about having one installed. He can also check and other wiring in your premises. As above, changing providers is not going to help you.

Either it's your internal wiring as mentioned above, or it's because you're living in the wrong part of town. So it is possible that the master splitter won't make a dramatic improvement. Either way, switching providers won't help.

 

RCM123: upload never goes above 1mbps..ever!!! I am still on ADSL as VDSL is not available in our area yet..

 

The theoretical maximum upload for ADSL2+ is only 1.4Mbps. As you're so far away from the exchange, getting less than 1Mbps upload is entirely expected.

Thanks for the responses. I applied  last year for VDSL and Spark sent a Chorus technician to install a separate box and line (with an ethernet plug) for the VDSL router. I am guessing he created a master splitter that time. The guy then told me after checking the nearest 'street box' that my house just missed the 800m mark ergo no VDSL so they switched me back to ADSL and made me return the router.

 

I am now using the new ethernet connection plugged to my router (technicolor) but since then internet performance has been unstable and going bad to worse everyday. Spark advised me to change channels  and to try channels 1,6 or 12 but still no relief. I was hoping the tech services of 2Degrees will be better and is their free router any good? Am I better off to change router instead of going into a 12 month plan with 2Degrees? Fee charges do not differ a lot anyways.

You should probably report it as a fault and ask them to run a monitor on your connectioN
You may have more chance of a better support person at 2degrees but I think Spark should be able to help

We can't say whether an ISP change would make a difference because you haven't posted ADSL line stats. OOKLA doesn't show your ADSL line sync speed, it only shows the end result in terms of downloading so we don't know if the problem is your line or Sparks bandwidth.

 

 

 

If you want line speed improved then a master filter is a good idea, I can put one in for you too.

 

 

 

If you are sure its Spark's problem, then be aware that @deg do not provide an actual landline phone service, you need to connect your phone to the voip output of their modem, which they call a landline for people who don't know the difference. Means your modem becomes the weak link affecting phones as well as internet, and you may need to ask them whether their phone service will connect all the phones in the house.





Qualified in business, certified in fibre, stuck in copper, have to keep going  ^_^

As pointed out changing providers will not change your DSL sync speed in any way - and this is the main thing here. You will not get above 1Mbps upload moving to 2degrees as this is the maximum the technology supports.

 

The fact your one speedtest result above shows such a slow upload tends to point to the connection being in use while performing a test, and my pick on the variable speeds is saturation of your upload such as leaving a torrent program running in the background.
