Hey guys, So I was lucky enough to get fibre installed today all in one visit. They set up the ONT and hooked up the vodafone modem to the ONT, they told me to connect my phone to the modem since vodafone will be disabling my copper line. I was wanting to use my own asus router but it does not have connections for phone(RJ11). I noticed the ONT had RJ11 ports (POTS1 and POTS2) so I tried connecting my phone into both ports but the phone doesn't connect at all. When I use the phone it beeps when its connected to the modem but it doesn't make a sound when connected straight to the ONT.

vodafone do not use the ONT to provide the voice service, you need to use their device or another ATA device to provide it for you

Vodafone supply a fully managed voice service using VoIP to their RGW. They do not provide a service using the ONT ATA ports.

There are pros and cons to both solutions and many threads on here discussing this.

If you set your Asus up with the correct settings (and it's an RT-XX model) you should be able to connect to the internet (DHCP on VLAN 10). If you can log in to the router Voda supplied and change its settings to connect from behind the Asus, the VoIP may still work too. Voda might not be able to manage it though, and if they push any settings out to their router the VoIP might stop working.

Personally I'd still give it a go, just from a tinkering perspective to see if it works. YMMV.

If you want to be able to use the Phone ports on the ONT. You will need to change ISP to one that uses those ports by default. AFAIK Spark, Trustpower, and My Republic are the only ones who use the ONT ports.

Currently on a contract with Vodafone. Interested in getting an ATA adapter.
