So, I installed a master filter directly to the phone line, where it comes into the house. Nothing else on the line. I am quite far from the exchange, right on the VDSL limit (if not a bit beyond). For both ADSL and VDSL the addition of the Master Filter made my throughput drop by about 10%. Which is OK as I just took it out again but I am curious if anyone has a reason why that happened. With all the reports here of master filters being next unicorns for throughput 'n all.

As FYI, the master splitter and modem was in a server cabinet so there would be a bit of noise. Just naked connection.

Or did I manage to hook it up incorrectly (I did try and check with Google)? I'd need to check again what exactly I did.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

you have reset your modem and router
your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

Your ISP and plan
Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

What was your sync rate (not speedtest result) and downstream line attenuation before and after the filter?

If you wiring was already great, then adding in a filter isn't going to improve much, and potentially cause problems if not installed properly.

how did you have it wired? did you install fresh wiring from the filter to where your modem is?

Yes, I did install fresh wiring. I'd need to reconnect and check how it was connected up. I couldn't find anything definite on how it needs to be wired.

I only have the results for VDSL and it was around 13-14Mbit down with it installed and without about 15-16Mbit (as I said, I'm far from the cabinet)

That could be dlm mixing with things because the connection dropped.

whats your ADSL speed? 10-12mbit?

Whats the upload on VDSL. Interested to know...... I know the upload on VDSL goes super crap at about that range. If you get less than 1.1mbit on VDSL upload you prob should go back to ADSL.

Yeh master filter wont make any difference if you are plugging DIRECTLY into the incoming line. The filter just filters out all the noise from other jacks in your property. I would just Plug the modem in when the line comes in.

Edit in 90% of cases a master filter is the way to go.
