Hey all,

One of my friends is on the 100/10 Cable plan with Vodafone ( same as me before I switched to Fibre =)

she runs her PC through ethernet cable and is using the Cisco DPC3008 and has been using it for 3 years,

Vodafone has informed her they didn't upgrade her modem to the Technicolor one last year, BUT she says

the Cisco has worked great and I've heard it was a good choice, do you guys think she is better staying with the

Cisco DPC3008 or letting them upgrade her to the technicolor one ( I've read mixed opinions on this modem )

does anyone know what would be best,

she doesn't use 10 devices all connecting to internet at same time just used the connection for the PC

Thanks

Jamie

if it ain't broke don't fix it.

i would hold onto the Cisco DPC3008, i have mixed views to the Technicolor ( I am not fond of the unit really to be upfront )

http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/products/collateral/video/cable-modems-high-speed-data/7016879a.pdf

Specs show 340mb downstream / 120mb Upstream, that's plenty of bandwidth (IF VODAFONE WILL PROVISION IT THAT WAY)

Is the PC just plugged straight into the cable modem?

I don't know ALOT about technology but from what I hear around the Cisco modem is quite decent,

Yup the pc is connected directly from the Cisco Modem - ethernet cord - PC ethernet port,

That's a very poor setup - it means your PC is directly exposed to the internet if they don't have a router. I hope they're at least running something like Windows 8 or Windows 10 and have the firewall enabled to offer basic protection.

Yep.

Direct connection to the modem was the default connection policy was cable was first run, and for a long time TelstraClear would'nt support people hooking up routers/AP's in front of the device (because of the huge variability in devices, configs, chance of cockup etc). It also was at a time when the security threats from the world were a little different.

Many of the community here prefer the Cisco as it's literally the closest thing to a 'dumb' device, converting a cable connection to an Ethernet friendly port. This allows huge flexibility to connect and manage your own equipment - which for many folks will be an Apple Wireless router or similar.

Although Vodafone does have network firewalls in place, they are by necessity very light in what they do to filter out the nasties and it would be better to put a secondary device in place (like the Thomson). Not least of which it will mean the computer is not having to spend so much energy filtering out stuff etc.

If your friend isn't in the self manage camp (I am like many here), changing to the Thomson is a good idea especially if vodafone offered it. I'm not familiar with the default setup of it and what additional protections are on (Im not hopeful there is much turned on).

I believe many Fibre connections work the same way, in that the fibre device is just a bridge and many customers connect their own router in line
