Yeah I know - wrong forum and who the h*ll wants dial-up - but I didn't see a dial-up forum?

My 70yr old mother needs dial-up (broadband is way more than she wants/needs), and doesn't do anything other than check emails. She was on the Slingshot pay $100 for the whole year plan (excellent plan!) - and the dirty monkeys have changed plans, demanded quite rudely that she take tolls with them or pay more - so no more Slingshot when her years up in March!

I've checked out a few and they are mostly over $10 for unlimited, or demand tolls be moved (the elderly like Telecom...) or require payment by Credit Card or Direct Debit (the elderly don't like either of those options...).

Wondering if anyone knows whether Supra is OK? Reliable? OK support? I just phoned them and got an answerphone to leave a message - are they a small company?

Orcons Hyper 30 plan looks ok, but again - phoned and waited ages and no-one!

Xtra I am loathed to recommend to her, as their plan of $10 for a scrawney 10hrs - with a $28 setup fee is a giant rip - but easy for her to pay the bill...

Any thoughts on Kiwionline? Unlimited for $59.70/6 mths looks ok, and she can pay by chq apparantly. Are they a reliable service? I remember years ago anyone with a kol email address got their mail bounced half the time, has it improved?

Compass? Snap?

Eek!

Xnet doesnt look too bad for $10 unlimited, but it appears that they want your tolls too.

NZ connections wiki?

Ta - been there - very good list! But some are wrong with the pricing for "without tolls".

Yes, that seems to be correct:

http://www.xnet.co.nz/dialup/

However, Xnet's tolls are a pretty good deal IMO, and even if your mother doesn't want to move her Tolls, IIRC it's only an extra $5 per month to leave her tolls with somebody else.

I have several friends in rural areas on Xnet Dial-up, and with one exception, they have been very happy with it.  The remaining person has a very bad line in Northland, and for some reason, Xtra provided superior speeds.

Here's an idea

Why don't you and the rest of the family pay the broadband for your mother. If you want to let her pay $10 towards it.
But personally I would pay the whole thing.

Just athought.

Best one I can come up with is freenet. (by compass) free.net.nz

$10 a month unlimited and no tolls (Tolls are available on request through Coded Access)
Bonus is if you do not use it at all in a given month, No charge.
Less than 60 minutes per month, No charge. (maybe you accidentally connect for a few minutes)

I use it still often, great for impromptu email access on the cheap or as backup main internet.

I can give you a code if you do take the Xtra path to waive the connection fee. Got a couple of spares still floating. 01q55t17f64n

I was going to say that I know of two KOL customers who have had good times, but that plan of $0 if you use less than 60 minutes - man, that is awesome!

As I said before, pay the broadband for your mother $30 a month approx is all that it will cost.

Great idea (and have done this in the past), but we are one income 3 kids at the mo so can't right now.  When back up to 2 incomes she will SO get broadband for free Money mouth

I've been reasonably happy with Kiwi Online's 9-95 a month for the past 3 years. It does seem to have got slightly more finickety on occasion lately, however. Which I think will mean I will finally migrate to broadband (at home).
