A new speedtest in town, powered by Netflix: Fast.com.

I got 210 MBps on my first test.

If you're going to post your results here it would be useful to also post a normal speedtest.net result as well as what Internet speed plan on as a basis for comparison otherwise it's completely meaningless

Tried it at home (vpn'd in via work - relevant to the story), and tried it, said I wasnt' connected to the internet.  Orly  then how did I VPN in.

Wonder if my - interesting dns setup - is causing issues for it.

I think this is purely a Netflix play as in speed to their service. Not so great for other stuff.

The faq:
?
English (US)
What is Fast.com measuring?
Fast.com estimates your current download speed. You will generally be able to get this speed from leading internet services, which use globally distributed servers.
Why does Fast.com only report on download speed?
Download speed is most relevant for people who are consuming content on the Internet, and we want fast.com to be very simple and fast.
Why does Fast.com not report on ping, latency, jitter and other things?
Fast.com is a simple-to-use way for consumers to estimate what speed their ISP is providing. It is not a network engineer's analysis and diagnostic suite.
How is the number calculated?
To calculate this estimate, Fast.com performs a series of downloads from Netflix servers.
Will Fast.com work everywhere in the world?
Fast.com will work globally on any device (phone, laptop, or smart TV with browser).
Why is Netflix offering Fast.com?
We want our members to have a simple, quick, commercial-free way to estimate the speed their ISP is providing.
What can I do if I'm not getting the speed I pay for?
If results from fast.com and other speed tests often show less speed than you have paid for, you can ask your ISP about the results.

38 mbps compared to 48.9 on Speedtest. However, an ongoing problem I have is my RBI speed jumps all over the place. I really see it when streaming on those blasted adaptive Flash sites that don't let me choose my own resolution.

Confirmed... I posted this note to a Netflix gent I know...

"So... fast.com ... It's wonderfully vague and says "Netflix servers"... Does it in fact use the netflix steering algorithm and source the test material for an individual user from the specific Netflix OCA node(s) that they would get streaming content from? (Don't make me bust out wireshark please)"

And got this as a response...

"Spot on, thats exactly how it works."

Cheers -N

As expected. It's not a "speedtest" to find out how your overall Internet access speed is, but answers "How fast can we deliver Netflix to you"

Everything else is third-party content, who cares?
