I've got a below average (~13mb/s down) ADSL2+ connection at home, its been fine for the 6 months we've been here, but recently its been playing up.

The connection went down the other day for hours, and when I had a look in the morning it was only connected at 2mb/s down. After power cycling the router, it came back to just 11mb/s. I notice that my upload is only 696kb/s which is abysmal.

Can someone look at my xDSL stats and advise if I'm interpreting these correctly?

(Image should enlarge on click)

My interpretation:

Attenuation appears normal for being a fair distance from the exchange. Maybe a couple of K's?

SNR appears terrible. I'm at the limit of what an xDSL connection can work at from a noise perspective.

I'm on naked ADSL with _no other devices, only the modem_ connected to any jack points. The house has three jack points, and the modem is plugged into the one that gave the best sync speed. I'll get another modem to test in the next week.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

  • you have reset your modem and router
  • your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
  • your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
  • you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

  • Your ISP and plan
  • Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
  • Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
  • Your general location (or street)
  • If you are rural or urban
  • If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
  • If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
  • If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

Due to the statement of "The house has three jack points" you need a master filter.

Thanks, I suspected as much.

Am I interpreting the other stats correctly?

Possibly, the 12 dB margin is normal. Look for it changing considerably, as that indicates a change in line conditions which is usually caused by things drying out or getting wetter as the antique copper network gets rain on it.

Really need to see the stats from when it was running slowly. Often it will get full of water, drop, resync slowly at the 12dB margin target, and then as things dry out that noise margin will go up and up as the sync is lower than the line will allow for.

If its run ok on the internal wiring then a proper filter will probably not solve the problem, but it will at least mean that you know for a fact your wiring is good, and that the fault is probably outside. But if you have water getting into internal wiring then expect a charge from chorus for the call out. Your call if you get one it. Is fiber coming soon?

Otherwise find the first phone socket from the demarc, open it up and disconnect the others from it and put the router there. That way you will eliminate the other sockets as being problems.

The SNR is targeted to be 12dB so its not terrible as you say more like normal

master filter should help rule out any issues with your internal wiring

Thanks for the insights.
Yes I can get fibre here, should have jumped on it Months ago.
I'll see what I can do about a master filter or disconnecting the other jack points in the interim.

Will posts stats when the line is really bad if I can spot it.

I am puzzled why anyone that can get fiber would be persisting with a ADSL connection. VDSL, yeah tollerable but that crap ADSL speeds is a no brainer to upgrade.

I only got adsl activated here because I wanted a connection when we moved in (instead of waiting weeks to months without).
Been busy and it worked perfectly alright for our usage (until now), so didn't get around to it I guess.

Getting fiber is a no-brainer.  wink

Your downstream attenuation suggests a line length of 2.0km, so VDSL is not an option.

Installing a master filter will cost you $150 - $200, and would make sense if you intend to stay with ADSL.

I would order fiber and tolerate the slow ADSL for a month or two (or three).

We did the same thing at our place and lived with a poor connection for a while. Getting ADSL first was the easiest as it is already in the house, no vdsl for us unfortunately. At least when you apply for fiber now, you will have a connection until fiber is delivered. Then they just plug in and swap the connection over to the fiber.

The connection has further degraded. Recently normal is no connection (for half a day or more), or like this 7mbs down, 390kbs up. About half what was normal a week or so ago.

I've booked in fibre install. UFF coming to scope on Wednesday, fingers crossed its happening soon.

Current ISP booked chorus tech to come have a look. they said (paraphrasing) "you don't need to be at home, the tech will call you if they need to access your premesis"

Chrous tech showed up and left a note "you weren't home so we left, k thnx bai"

Got other modems to try, but the speed isn't improving. Not willing to splurge on a master filter install when fibre could be happening soon. I've had a look at disconnecting other jack points, but the house is old and a PITA to access, so I've not touched it. Hrm..

There is a 90% chance that the problem is your house wiring.

An ADSL filter install/rewiring would probably cost you $200.

Fibre installs are famously slow - Chorus often take months.

You have to decide whether several weeks/months of broken ADSL is worth $200.

If you aren't willing to spend a few hundred to fix then why complain in the first place??

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

often low upstream is a prime indicator of a fault there, looking at the specturm it really could do with a cleanup.

your chorus experience, sounds like a classic.. visionstream experience...

Given fibre, ild suggest you run a clean run from the ETP if your handy as a temporary resume.

I wanted help troubleshooting the issue to see what my options were and what I might be able to do.

Disconnecting other jack points sounded helpful and might have been doable. Now I'm not so sure.
