I've read around about gigatown, but it isn't clear to me exactly what things were done in Dunedin to make it support Gigabit speeds. As a thought experiment, what would be involved, and what would need to be upgraded for the current UFB network to support gigabit connectivity everywhere? Physically speaking, what equipment would need to be changed to support this?

A 10 fold drop in 100ge pricing from Cisco/Juniper and the OLT vendors? Next up would be 10gpon for the last mile and finally a reason to do it

The current UFB hardware is gigabit capable. You just need to have the $$$ and sign with an ISP (eg MyRepublic) that supports the plan and you can get gigabit outside Dunedin too.

Yep, UFB is already Gigabit capable. It's up to the RSPs (and the LFCs although I think they all offer it) to decide whether they want to buy/sell Gigabit connections.

Whilst you may be able to offer gigabit plans in other LFC's with current hardware it really wouldn't be good. Some LFC OLT's only support 4 x 10g uplinks and no 40/100ge cards exist for them. These units feed 1000-1200 connections at a time so wholesale upgrade to gigabit would not only risk constraining the PON strand (Current max 2.5gbit) but also risk a single PON line card flooding the OLT uplink's. Beyond that there's no UFB line item for 40ge or 100ge NNI's so you've got load balancing 10ge ports for the handover to the to the ISP aswell which makes things interesting as I dont think all the LFC's support LACP for the NNI's.

Gigatown is a nice test bed to iron out all these issues, I'm not 100% sure but is gigatown a prototype 10gepon network??

Gigabit UFB plans are available nationwide on Chorus and all LFC's but not at the same pricing as Dunedin which is a special deal. Price starts at (from memory) $280 for the connection.

Mass market Gigabit isn't possible without pretty significant price increases as RSP's would need 10Gb and potentially 100Gbe networks to support everything.

I've never transferred anything at higher than 80Mbps (10MBps) anywhere ... I don't think you're missing out ... although ... i've never tried transferring 10 of those files at once to different servers ...

We offer 1Gbps in Tauranga and Hamilton for $119 / month. Occasionally we do promos for the plan at $99.

Primo Wireless offers gigabit in New Plymouth, starting at $109 / month.

Providers need 10Gbps handovers and aside from Spark/Vodafone, I don't know of other providers have have 10Gbps handovers at every UFB POI.

This is a bit silly especially for a home user, 200Mbit is plenty (for now).

Even if you had a house with 5 people streaming TV to different channels all day everyday + downloading and skype you probably would still have trouble flooding it. The people in Dunedins utilization on those gigabit connections is probably under 1% of a gigabit in 90% of cases if you average it over an entire month.

This means if they downloaded all day every day for an entire month at 10mbit they would download about 3TB per month. I mean 3TB this is a ridiculous amount of data, even if it was 4K video, its probably still unwatchable.

If you were running a business then there may be some real reasoning to do this. But you will probably also want a business grade level of service as well, this is why people pay a lot more for business fibre, Dark Fibre, or HSNS.

My view is it is extremely unlikely anything more than 200/200 and to be honest 100/100 is more than sufficient for everyone.

The majority of data growth is in streaming video. And 4k Netflix is around 20mbit. So unless you're living in a 20 bedroom house where everyone streams 4k Netflix then it's just not feasible.

Gigatown is pure marketing. Since even corporate customers with 200+ employees would struggle with that.
Even Weta only has a 1gb link into the internet and most of the time it's idle.
