The green cabinet is a Chorus cross-connect copper cabinet.

It jumpers the local connections from the houses in the street to the main bearer cable going back to the exchange.

There is no active equipment in this cabinet, just copper cables on a patch frame.

As part of the Fibre to the Node programme Chorus replaced many of these with active FTTN cabinets (with a DSLAM inside) so the distance from the exchange equipment to the user was significantly shortened, providing better broadband.

If this cabinet is inside a UFB build area then it is unlikely to be upgraded now, it will be overbuilt with fibre.

The blue cabinet is NOT a Chorus cabinet.

Here's hoping someone makes up a misc. ticket for that quiet front terminal, eh? It'll be nice grotty with all the recent rain.

Speaking of weird cabinet-things...came across this in Birkdale at the weekend. The top of the box says "CABLE TV" but I'm fairly sure it isn't. Anyone know what it is?

We have those on our street here in Palmerston North. Basically they were left over from the late 90's when Telecom dabbled in a Cable TV trial in Auckland/Wellington, in our street they got used instead of the usual grey pillars.

All of the pillars deployed in Wellington as part of the TV deployment were round. I wonder whether these have infact been sitting around for ~18 years in a warehouse or Chorus simply found a supplier who only had cable tv branded ones as they only needed a small quantity? They were only deployed for a very short time before the UFB architecture changed away from the green pillars entirely.

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

The "Cable TV" boxes were used in our street when the subdivision went in 2000/2001. My understanding is these were simply old stock to be used up.

That's interesting as I must say that thing looked quite new.
