Any feedback here would be appreciated.

I have been a Vodafone Cable User for many years and have lived through the congestion and was heavily affected and had always thought I would ditch VF as soon as I was able.

I have just moved house and VF setup my cable and it seems have changed my speed form 100/10 to 50/2.

I am a heavy gamer (WoW) and actually have noticed no difference between the 100/10(old house) and the 50/2(new house). In game latency to LA servers is still around 150ms.

My question is....what difference would I expect to see if I changed to UFB as this is available on my street? Would my gaming latency to the US reduce..etc

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

  • you have reset your modem and router
  • your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
  • your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
  • you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

  • Your ISP and plan
  • Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
  • Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
  • Your general location (or street)
  • If you are rural or urban
  • If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
  • If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
  • If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

Latency of 150ms to US is not that bad if you want low latency then it might be easier to move to the US

Speed and Latency are different and cause of faster access does not always mean lower latency

Your latency is due to the physical distance to LA, not the type of broadband you have.

Your latency might drop by a few ms on fiber, but then it may go up as well. I doubt any change would be significant.

Benefits of fiber over cable is it works in power cuts (you can use a Sentry Lite or similar as backup power), it has MUCH lower congestion, generally faster, more choice of ISP, and it's really reliable. I've had fiber for a year, an overhead install in windy Wellington, it's been rock solid.

You may have been provisioned wrongly - are you paying for 100/10 or 50/2Mbps?

Have you signed a new 12-month contract after the move?

As a long-suffering Wellington cable user myself, I would opt for fibre if it was an option for me - not because of latency (as discussed above) but because of HFC's terrible peak congestion problems.

I am not to worried about the drop in speed from 100/10 as that can be fixed by calling them. I did get a significant reduction to my monthly fee for about a year...but as we all know that wasnt the real issue that irked us all.

I really wanted to go UFB with Bigpipe but they dont do my area sadly so will probably order 2 degrees. From what I read Myrepublic are very dissapointing.
