Hi,

About an hour ago I was quickly setting up a new USB DVB-T stick on a laptop and whilst scanning for channels (and having to hold the the crappy supplied antenna about 7ft off the ground to get a signal) I came across a channel title "Fashion TV" with a logo and 'coming soon' graphic and a few moments later a channel titled "Worldnet" with a blank screen - the channel numbers in the software bore no resemblance to actual Freeview channel numbers so I cant help pointing anyone to them. "Worldnet" from memory used to be the US State department propaganda satellite channel..not sure if this is the same one of course. I'm in Christchurch if that helps. Neither of them are showing up when I do a scan with the old Tivo at home..hmm.

If true it would be the 3rd time I think Fashion TV has come to NZ, didn't know anyone who watched it

I noticed my Panasonic PVR had picked up a new Freeview HD channel last night. Fashion tv on Channel 30. Google found this web page Freeview NZ. From that it is regional for Auckland only/Freeview plus. Not sure that the rest of the country is going to miss much..., but I could be wrong!

I just did a scan with scan-s2 on my MythTV box and I can see a FashionTV channel on the Kordia mux (578000 Hz) from Wharite. The service id is 1422 and it replaces one of those placeholder channels that I saw last time I did a scan. I have not tried to tune it in yet.

Good grief. If they're importing channels from overseas, couldn't they get something like Dave or Yesterday from the UK instead? Surely they wouldn't cost too much?

On these kinds of threads there's often a real pejorative kind of response that has assumptions that, simply because they're not interested in a particular offering and think it's cr@p, this marks the downfall of FTA TV.

Generally, I'm not worried by Freeview offering a catholic range of channels for people to watch - indeed, it's good that such variety allows many different audiences to be catered for. It's great that the local Chinese or Indian communities get a chance to view such content (though the quality of these broadcasts would put me off!). So I don't care if TVNZ have set up Duke TV - while that blokey kind of stuff doesn't interest me, there are those that will like this stuff. Similarly, while my wife (who is fashion-mad) will be ecstatic if Fashion TV comes to Freeview, it doesn't hold any interest for me.

The problem is when there is an absence of or decrease in the less commercially viable types of programming (as opposed to simply increasing the variety). The demise of TVNZ7 and TVNZ8, resulting in the removal of quality kids' TV programming, excellent current affairs series, NZ-specific content etc - that's where it hurts. In the age of VOD and recorders, who needs +1 channels (which is what I think 7 and 8 turned into)? But the absence of the content previously on channels like 7 and 8 do make a material difference to both the range and quality of available content.
