Any ideas..

I have a D-Link DSL-502T ADSL modem in bridge mode and a Linksys WRT54G router.  I cannot get the router to talk to the modem - just keep getting the message "cannot retrieve IP address from PPPOE server".

I have the router in PPPoE mode and have entered the correct username/password for my ISP.  Modem shows an ADSL connection (as in signal strength etc).

(I have also tried my old DSL-604T as a modem, bridge mode with wireless off, but get the same message.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Cheers

Darryn

Assuming your in NZ connecting to a Telecom DSLAM then you will need to use PPPoA rather than PPPoE.

Doh, just see your in Aus, so you may be on PPPoE, cant help.

Thanks Cyril,

No, I am in New Zealand..

I purchased the modem yesterday from Acquire - although I did update to the lastest firmware (NZ/AUS).  When selecting the mode, I do not have a PPPOA selection available, just PPPOE.  Although, there is a "TELSTRA CABLE" mode which makes me think I perhaps should look at the firmware and try to restore the NZ settings somehow.

Thanks for your help,

Darryn

For what you are trying to do, I think you will need to have an ADSL modem which supports "Half Bridge" mode.  This is where the modem handles authentication etc with the ISP, but does not perform any NAT or Router functions, instead it passes the Public IP address through to the Router.

AFAIK, DSL-502T doesn't support Half-Bridge mode, but there are various other people on Geekzone using Dynalink RTA1320 (or something like that) which does support this mode.

Do a search for Half Bridge mode and you should be able to find further info.

As Grant says you need to use half bridge mode, which I dont think is supported on your modem. There are others around like the Dynalink and the Linksys AM300 which is discussed here aswell. I am not sure what happens if you turn off the NAT router in the 502 it may work, but I doubt it as there is no way to pass the WAN address to the router.

Edit, I just see the lattest firmware for the 502T does support half bridge, but dont know how well it works, check

I believe the "GenII" version of 502T supports half bridge mode, but may need a firmware upgrade. If it is not GenII, send it back ASAP if ya just brought it, and get them to supply a GenII

It's a borrowed modem - I'm trying to set up Apples Back to my Mac and my old router was not up to the task.  I thought I might save a few bucks buying a simple router that was tested with this service but looks like I might have to either grab a new modem as well or stick the other stuff on TM and get an all in one.

Thanks for your help gents,

Darryn

Anybody running a Linksys AM300 ADSL Modem?  If so, does it have half-bridge mode?  Some websites say it does, however I downloaded the manual from the Linksys website and can find nothing.

Cheers

Included with my AM300 was a 2 page (hardcopy) manual on half bridge mode. I've since sold the AM300 which had obvious issues. These issues have apparently been resolved with a firmware update.

Thanks for that!

Any ideas if there are different "generations" of these modems - ie will the firmware in the link above work with a modem I purchase from DES or Acquire?  Or should I look for a particular generation?

OR

Can anyone recommend a modem where half-bridging works well.

Cheers

Personally I would cut my losses and get an all in one.

Yep that's what I'm thinking.

A WAG54GP2 would even rid me of my PAT2T box.. What an uncluttered desk I've have!
