just installed this firmware but it toke away the xtra inferance away from my router where it shows the dB and line stuff http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/Download/download.aspx?product=DSL-302G_NZ&revision=REV_C&filetype=Firmware the satus light keeps flashing too, doesnt normally do that

Not sure what your issue is, or what an 'xtra inference' is?

If it is toking away, you should ask it to stop, or at least share with you.

What was wrong with your device that required a firmware upgrade?

thought it was best to keep the firmware up to date... on the first screen its a xtra interface with the diagnostics connection status and username and password and then it goes to the d link interface with all the advanced settings.

Um... if you look at your version (DSL-302G_TX) on the Tech support site on D-Link, it says:

Firmware updates

Xtra-supplied DSL-302G comes with customised Xtra firmware. The interface is identical to the generic interface or accessible via the ADVANCED USER MODE menu.

For firmware updates please contact Xtra support on 0800 738 738.

NOTE: It is not recommended to load non-Xtra firmware.

After loading generic firmware you may need to change the VPI and VCI numbers to suit your line settings. Most common settings in New Zealand: VPI=0, VCI=100; in Australia VPI=8, VCI=35.

is it possible to get faster speeds using other firmwires? my Attenuation for upstream is now in a yellow font and is 46.0dB is it better if its higher or lower? the downstream is in a green font maby green = good, yellow = ok, red= bad

downstream better if higher/ lower dB?

i used to get 21.0db downstream 41.0 dB upstream before any isp changing. now 22.0dB 43.0dB

would it of done any harm installing the non xtra interface and then installing the xtra interface straight back? with out any clean reboots.

Reboots are usually required for nearly all tasks in the router... (e.g. editing settings) and it includes firmware upgrades too.

As it recommends you DON'T install generic firmware on a Xtra-supplied modem, DON'T do it.

Any Xtra firmwares are supplied by Telecom.

I did that to a 502T that I didn't realise came from Xtra. I gave DLink tech support a call and they confirmed that I had bricked it. At least replacement units are cheap on Tradme.

If it's not broken don't fix it. As you found out now it's broken. There's no reason to "update firmware" if things are working. It is just an unnecessary risk.

Well I upgraded my DSL-302 GenII and it worked perfectly fine.

bear in mind there are different generations and hardware revisions, so you must be certain to get the correct firmware.

The status light also changed for me too (blinking is actually d-link default normal mode, don't know why xtra changed it)

If you want to go back to the old firmware you can (should be able to get it off xtra, I did just in case I wanted it, should still have it here if you want it)

If you can still access the router and get internet you have NOT bricked it. YES some things will look different in the new firmware, YES some settings may have changed and caused the connection to not work, but if you can get into the config pages then it's not bricked.

They only say not to upgrade it because if you messed up (wrong firmware/wrong method) you would have to open your router, connect JTAG cable (which most people don't have) and use recovery mode (which most people don't know how to do) to fix it.

You can find the adsl line stats in the status menu.

It might work as long as you set the VPI=0 / VCI=100 and PPPoA VCMux along with your authentication id. Unfortunately Xtra cant help you set it up anymore but should be easy to do.

Your downstream attenuation wont change much, its caused by length/resistance of your phone line. Running different firmware on your router cannot change the line attenuation. Your phone line probably runs at least 3.5km to the phone exchange.

Lots of other factors affect your speed too, but check that interleaving is on or you could get a few data errors on that line.

Time to find a new industry!
