Hello

We are moving to a rural property outside Tauranga (Pahoia), about 7km from SH2, so i would assume a long way from any exchange.
The previous owners sent me a speedtest result, using normal ADSL.

Obviously this kind of speed is not going to be good enough to work from home, and there is no VDSL available.
So off to 4G I presume...

I've heard mixed reviews on some of the companies that offer services in the area.

I am considering:

Vodafone Rural BB 4G 700
Spark 4G 700
Full Flavour
Lightwire
Compass
WirelessNation
Netspeed

Some of these seem to have lightning fast speeds, I just want to be sure we don't get stuck in some kind of contract with terrible service and terrible customer service.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

you have reset your modem and router
your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

Your ISP and plan
Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
Your general location (or street)
If you are rural or urban
If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

either depends on what plan you sign up for, read the website

you trade off data for speed.

more speed = less data, more data = less speed

Assuming they have coverage, give Skinny a go - they've got the best price/GB at the moment.

If this doesn't work out, feel free to chat to us.

We're hoping to have some new plans out soon but we are reliant on Vodafone for this.

Avoid the other local wireless options - anecdotal evidence from recent customers who have joined us suggests they have some obsolete technology and/or oversubscription issues.

My folks are at Pahoia and were on Netsmart for a long time.

Netsmart were recently taken over by Lightwire.

My folks usually get around 10/10 speed-wise but they are just on a small plan.

They have a wee dish thing on the roof (which requires line of sight to somewhere, I forget, maybe the top of Minden?), which is cabled to a small powered doodad in the office, which is then cabled to their router.

Support with Netsmart was pretty good for an ISP and the changeover to Lightwire had some minor issues.

But I found Lightwire's support to be quite good also and there have been no more issues since then that I know of.

Dad reckons Netsmart had been on at him for years to changeover to a different but slightly more expensive setup but he's a stubborn sort.

Will be interesting to see how he and Lightwire get on!

Definitely have a look at Skinny. Best $/GB value at the moment. Addresses on Pahoia Rd don't seem to work in their checker but if you use one from Omokoroa Rd it seems to work, so if you put in an address from there and change delivery address you should be OK.
