Was on Go Large.
Am about 800m from exchange.
Got switched to Pro plan today, usagemeter says Pro plan, and over 300MB usage since the switch.
Have rebooted modem a couple of times.

ADSL Firmware Version: 5.00.04.00 - 5.00.03.00 - 5.00.03.00 Annex A - 01.07.2b - 0.52

Check out my super slow data rates. In the same house, I have previously had upwards of 6.5Mbit or more on Go Large.
What do the SNR and Attentuation tell us (I am unsure how these relate to ADSL).

Heres a speedtest I just did. I am suspicious about the upload speed, as its exactly the same as I was getting on Go Large, and the 160 upstream data rate looks artificial to me.

I have a DLINK 504T, which I would be happy to replace if need be. I have my LAN sorted with a router and wifi I am happy with, so a recommendation for a good modem with or without a router would be good.

Now that's something!

You're paying premium for something far less than that. Those are some horrible sync speeds!

I'm on a similar type of plan, ihug broadband3, but at least I can sync at 7mbps.

Yeah, I was ok with stupidly bad speeds sometimes on Go Large, but kind of expected everything to roar into life once it hit the Pro plan. Not ruling out some errors on Xtras end or my end just yet though.

I too have a DSL-504T (and a Linksys WRT54G attached to one of the 4 ports...) and it works beautifully. Not sure about the Telecom supplied ones though.

Maybe the Go Large speed restriction (in their terms "traffic management") is still applied to your username/connection? I used to be on it... stayed on it for 3 months and left.

Alright, phoned Xtra, got some guy who asked me who I was and what my issue was, then after I told him, wanted me to tell him my name, and what was wrong (grrrr).

No peice of information I gave was absorbed the first go, everything was a minimum of twice, with my issue taking four goes (I was on Go Large, I have switched to Pro plan, usagemeter says Pro plan, speeds are still slow).

ANyway... despite the web form for the plan change saying as soon as usagemeter says the new plan name, its done, Xtra rep says service order is still open, plan still says Go Large, and don't call back till 3 working days have passed with no change.

Acceptable explanation, but the actual rep himself was useless. Had a heavy accent, but could not pick where from.

Tony,

Your downstream sync speed is very low for your connection stats. Regardless of what plan you are on, your downstream should sync at full speed. Any throttling or traffic management happens further back on the network.

Your upstream is normal for "go large" so tends to indicate your connection has not yet switched over to pro. Once this changes, i.e. somewhere in the 700-800+, then check your downstream again.

If you are 800m from the exchange, your downstream should be 7000+, if not there is a problem somewhere.

Yeah thats what I figured. With reboots it varies between 800 and 1.3 but months ago I have seen it as high as 6.8 +

The downstream line attenuiation is fairly high, should be under 20 for some decent download speeds, although this shouldnt make the data rate be low as your figure.

Do whatever you want to do man.

My downstream is 29dB & 7.5M so at 33dB Tony should be wondering where his 6.8M went.

Hey Tony,

If you want to PM me your line number I'll see if I can get some tests done to see where the problem is - because there definitely is a problem somewhere based on those stats!

33dB attenuation downstream looks like at least 2km line, so unless you are on narrow guage copper i would say the fault may be affecting the line resistance as well as speed since its connected on ADSL (not ADSL2+). Have you tested all filters and other jackpoints, perhaps another modem? Call back to Telecom because they do have some other people (with thick accents) who are broadband experts, they just work on a different helpdesk. Tell them your modem has a "slow sync". You may also notice the noise margin varies a bit — Xtras tier 1 helpdesk cant argue about noise margin so will go to find an expert.

160kbps is only the sync speed, the network speed is still limited to 128kbps. Higher sync speed allows for the overhead etc.

Time to find a new industry!

Hi Tony - did this get sorted? I had a similar issue the day I switched from Go Large, but what I was told by a manager at Xtra in the end was that although the usage meter may reflect the new plan, the new speeds do not kick in until around 3am the following morning. I am guessing this is what happened to you, too.

I had another random fault somewhere that they never really explained to me. Its all working now, though I just had some dropouts last night.

Speeds are good. Downloading from some overseas hosts at 350-450kbps.
