I live in christchurch and am unfortunatly out of the telstra cable network. I am an online gamer and enjoy youtube. So i am after a full speed broadband connection with 5 or 10 gig.

Which isp would be best for me, I am tossing up between Xnet fusion or telstra PDQ. Or if there are better ones i am flexible.

Any advice would be much appreciated

I seem to be reading alot of good comments relating to xnet.  Thinking about switching from ihug to them shortly I think.

Do you think the unbundling changes that Orcon are rolling out and also that ihug have planned will be followed by these other ISP's around the same time or better to stick it out with the big boys and wait?

The sensible ISPs are waiting to see what happens with cabinetisation and the future sub-loop unbundling that goes with it. Whether your ISP installs equipment at your exchange might eventually be less relevant than getting in before its full.

If Orcon and ihug get cold feet part way through the unbundling process (for the same reason) then some ISP might install more into the remaining exchanges. You wouldnt want to invest too much because half of it is redundant after cabinetisation. An average DSLAM can take around 500 customers, so if you manage to get 400 within 3 years and then suddenly you will be at 80 customers when cabinetisation hits. You wouldnt make a return on your investment unless installing smaller equipment that can be moved out later.

Time to find a new industry!
