Google's fibre plans could be going out the door and being replaced by 4G wireless. Could the same happen here with future fibre deployments especially considering 5G wireless is now pushing 12Gbps during testing.

Reasons cited for Google's change of mind seem to be slow deployments due to consents etc, sound familiar?

Google Fibre has not hit its subscriber goals, proving more expensive to deploy than they thought.

Thoughts?

Simple answer. No.

I'm not sure where you got the idea they were using 4G. They purchased Webpass (who specialise in Ethernet to the apartment using DMR or wireless backhaul) simply to expand their coverage.

I've read several articles on this and one mentioned 4G I'm sure.

That's quite true but surely they knew this wasn't going to be a quick payback.

Unless the laws of physics change wireless will never be a replacement for fibre. Period. It's no different to WiFi never being a replacement for cabled Ethernet, it is a complimentary offering.

Google's business model was to make cities bend over backwards in a vanity contest so Google could install the fibre for next to nothing, which is why they could offer such a cheap price.

Google business plan was a great one for themselves, but there seemed to be a lack of candidate cities willing to sell their soul to Google and give them all the benefits they wanted.

My understanding is that Google fiber uses 32 way GPON splits. So 32 customers per OLT port. While Chorus uses 24 in older fibre areas and 16 in newer areas. So Google fiber is inferior compared to NZ UFB.

And have seen a forum thread that says that Comcast drasticly lowers their prices in areas served by Google fiber. So no incentive to switch for people who don't need a super fast connection.

And wireless only makes sense for situations where you have alot of users, but the average data usage per user is quite low. And wireless normally has higher latency. So not as good for gaming and remote desktop type applications.
