Hi,

I was playing around with speedtest last night and saw that I was only getting 7Mbps down and 0.2Mbps up, when I used to get 15 down and 1 up. I jumped into the modem and discovered it is syncing at 11Mbps down and 0.3Mbps up.

This made me wonder - what upload speed / ratio is required for ACK packets? I know this is a little bit of an open question so let's keep it to running a speedtest or downloading a file over HTTP. Also, are there any factors such as faster or slower speeds that might influence the required ratio?

BTW I am not worried about diagnosing the connection issue. I just ordered FibreX so the DSL is going in a couple of days.

Depends on many things. TCP stacks differ between operating systems and versions of operating systems and they will have an impact on the up/down ratio. Some forms of encapsulation and VPNs can also dramatically change things.

A good clean 200kbit/sec should be enough to support 10Mbps download in many cases, but I have no doubt that in some scenarios it won't be enough. No easy answer sorry.

Cheers - N

7.8MB/s (62.4mbps) down and 180-200KB/s (1.44-1.6mbps) up on my VDSL connection

YMMV
