So I'm moving places this week and am going to be getting a new internet plan because I have found some cheaper than what I'm currently paying. I'm thinking I may go with voyager after a bit of research but was wondering if I should pay for their router for $225 or can anyone recommend one that is cheaper but still good? would need to be a vdsl one, but doesn't need to be crazy speed wise or anything, all I do is stream Netflix and some online gaming.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you're after cheap, look for an HG630b on Trademe. Another slightly pricier option would be an HG659, again on Trademe. They can both be found pretty easily as they're given out by the two largest ISPs. Both support VDSL, and both are fine for general home use. Depending on what sort of setup Voyager use, you may need to change the settings on it.

Another +1 for the HG659 as they are the cheapest and one of the better routers on the market. Just get one off trademe and you won't look back.

Voyager will flick through all the settings you need via email to program a new router - it is a really painless process. If you go with their router they'll pre-program it for you. It is a PPPoE connection over VLAN 10 with a username@dsl.vygr.net address so simple to set up.

On this, I have an HG659 provided by Vodafone under contract. Now that the contract has finished, if I switch ISP am I obliged to send it back to them or is it mine to keep? I assumed it belonged to them and they would chase me for it back but if loads of people get them and just sell them on Trademe is that not the case?

I believe with Vodafone and Spark you get to keep the modem. For Orcon you need to send it back.

Cool thanks for that. Looking to change to get Fibre now it is available to my house so that's a good help if I can keep the router, don't need to worry about buying one or finding a plan with one included. I got this one within the last year when the previous one died and with the new one they did include a courier bag to return the old one, although I haven't got around to sending it back and they haven't chased it up.
