So I've been on the border of VDSL for some time and left with ADSL2.

Recently both the chorus site and NZ Broadband map are now showing that VDSL is available at my address

Now I'm wondering if the change is due to additional cabinets, or due to changes in their VDSL settings.

Based on my ADSL modem output It doesn't look like my line has improved recently. I'm hoping my high Line Attenuation is due in part to cabling in the house rather than to my house.

  • Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,5 / 0,0
  • Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 10,5 / 20,5
  • SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 13,0 / 12,5

Is there a tracker anywhere that would indicate why I'm now being offered VDSL?

Chorus changed the bandplan they used (bascially the frequencies they use on the copper).

This improved the speeds and the distance they can push VDSL.

Chorus has spent several months upgrading all ISAM broadband switches from Bandplan 997 to 998.

There has been more development of Bandplan 998 over recent years as it is more widely deployed around the world.  Deployment of Bandplan 998 means the cut-off for VDSL provisioning has jumped from 10dB to 15dB.

For a typical cabinet area the previous VDSL availability looked like:

It has taken several months to draw and check the 15dB shapefiles for thousands of cabinets, resulting in a wider coverage area that looks like:

Long story short, VDSL is now available to more customers on the copper network.

So I'm currently seeing 20dB Downstream and yet I'm in your map. I've hears reports of water getting into my line, but how much of an impact could my in house wiring have on this value?

The 10-15 dB attenuation cut-off is measured differently to the attenuation modems report for DSL sync but 20 dB as a guide is certainly the upper end near to the cut-off.

What kind of sync rates do you get on ADSL at the moment?

I'd ask your ISP for a prequal and see what they say.

im guessing your on UCLL if its 1.2 up?

care to post your modem stats? would like to check the Signal to Noise Ratio, cause if your are on wholesale gear with that speed i think you might be SOL for VDSL

I am in the same boat. I was rung by Vodafone a few days ago, and asked if I would like a free upgrade to VDSL. Sounded good, but since I am 2.4 KM from exchange, 30 db loss and sync speed of 13.5-14.5 (depending on rebooting) down, 1.2 up (12db sig/noise) thought they were slightly mad. But didn't want to be a know all, said said bring it on. Will be interesting to see what happens. We are rural, with no fibre etc in the pipeline, so this is my best/only option.

P.S. I do have a master filter fitted, but not one suited to VDSL.

i would be highly surprised if you did get an install, and i wouldn't be surprised if you speed was that of ADSL or worse

I've been watching but stayed quiet on this one.

Given the tag I'll make comment however.

As chorus have already stated the distance has been extended. Often you may not get overly that much of an improvement but clearly a master filter is more than simply recommended.

I'll post changes in my case when I get home, but myself I went from a edge case to still an edge case. Many edgecases you have to consider the extra distances involved on your line which could put you way over.

At a quick guess, 20/2 or so would not be unexpected, likely higher. Possibly lower or nullvoid when it comes to installation

Yes but I need to check the generation to see if it is an ASDL or VDSL unit. I'll check the panel in the Garage as I want to confirm if the run from the splitter to the home office is a dedicate cable or off the standard phone lines.

So the master filter is an older MM-3200S.

As expected the ADSL line is using the existing phone wiring so will be subject to interference.
