Hey guys, i'd like to know your input on whats wrong with my broadband.

I'm a regular gamer + net junkie and recently my internet has been going unstable. what do i mean by unstable?for example.

I login World of Warcraft(windowed mode)... Start doing some quests, and i have msn+firefox+ventrilo and a few other applications running.Anyway, All of a sudden randomly,WoW Disconnects but my msn/browser is still logged in / working. My adsl light is fine too.. And after it disconnects i can just reconnect in a second later. The same thing happens to other programs i run too such as msn/warcraft 3 and ventrilo. anyone know why? PS: If this might help im on Orcon ZeroShock plan.

also note: i am not capped.

Probably the authentication is dropping, could be caused by anything. Can you post your adsl status from your routyer, including the noise margin? You might notice the noise margin varies alot, could be causing resyncs or errors. If Orcon say its not a line fault then it could be unstable for some reason that requires more testing. Try to isolate whether any phone equipment affects it, especially things like burglar alarm or Sky TV.

Time to find a new industry!

if none of the other services disconnect, could be a problem with the WOW server?

Two things:

1) Keep a ping running in a command window while you're playing:

ping -t

When you get a drop in your WoW game, jump over to the ping window and see if it sees any dropped packets. You might be getting little micro-outages.

2) If that doesn't help/offer any insight, install WireShark and keep that running while you're playing. The next drop, have a look at the traffic log and try and understand from that what caused the drop. For this, I am assuming that WoW uses TCP data. If it's UDP this won't be much help. But as you say other applications experience it, you might try logging those instead.

Step 2 is quite technical, so if you're not used to looking at packet captures, see if you can get someone to help you.

You also don't tell us how your laptop/PC is connected to your LAN. If it's wireless, you might be having some sort of quick wireless drop. I've seen this happen a few times.

Hope this helps in someway...

TCP Retransmissions are quite normal, unless you're seeing heaps and heaps of them.

No, that won't help :)

As I mentioned, using Wireshark is quite technical and requires a good understanding of what you're looking at.

Trying to debug a random problem like this without being in front of the PC is very hard. Thus why I suggested you get someone to help you out. Trying to do it via the forum would be quite impossible.

I'd go back to the simpler step of keeping a ping running and see if you see dropped packets when you have your little microoutage.
