Canada today declared broadband access a basic service for all Canadians.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today declared that broadband access Internet service is now considered a basic telecommunications service for all Canadians. The CRTC is also setting ambitious new speed targets and creating a new fund that will invest up to $750 million over and above existing government programs.

It's already rolling with speed increases and/or pricing reductions for customers across the board. To quote one person yesterday,

"25/10 DSL in Ontario, unlimited usage. I went from $56.95 to $49.95"

I'd be happy with that for the price of $54 NZ. I think DSL users (especially ADSL users) pay way too much for a connection here.

Is VDSL available in lots of small rural towns in Canada like it is in NZ? Considering say Glinks Gully in NZ - Can get VDSL there, And has some Chorus rural fibre. So if you are willing to pay for the install - You could have 1000/500 in the middle of nowhere.

And is there a equivalent of the NZ RBI scheme in Canada? As some of the fees on NZ broadband go towards funding NZ RBI.

Also ADSL in NZ costs more because UFB is now available - Less xDSL connections - mostly the same maintenance costs - Higher fees per connection to cover costs of maintaining the copper network.

And as usual, Australia hides in the corner and pretends broadband doesn't exist... :(

Quite likely that is the price of the broadband and you are required to have a phone line on top of that for $40 or so.

And that landline doesnt include free local calling like we do here.

Remember when the Japanese started selling NEAX systems to the post office - they were dumbfounded by the overloading because we have free local calling as a basic service right - most other countries pay per minute.

Not a lot of people realise that so it too pushes up the cost of a bundle.
