Hi all,

I've been trying to figure out how to get broadband in a difficult to access rural area. The place is in Waikere inlet, it has no road, and is only reachable by boat. It does not have a postal address.

I've spoken to Spark and Vodafone, they both provide wireless broadband, at an acceptable price (120GB for $100 per month). However without an address they can not provide a service.

There is 3G reception at the place and people there are using mobile data (via Spark). However it's quite expensive. Hence a search for a cheaper option.

Can somebody recommend what can be done in this situation?

Just give them a nearby address and ask for the service to be delivered at a certain co-ordinate? Isn't that ironic - a "rural" broadband service that can't be delivered because the property is too "rural". I wonder if you contacted the relevant government department who helped co-fund the rural broadband whether that may put them into gear?

I would assume at the very least that the property would have a Lot & DP number (or legal Description) which would help pin down an address which may be able to be used, but I'd need more information.

I am happy to try and help if the OP can PM me with as much detail as possible.

Getting fibre to difficult or apparently non existent addresses is my bread & butter from a work perspective, so I believe I should be able to help in this situation.

if the location only receives 3G signal via Spark it won't be possible to get their Wireless Broadband as its 4G only - Vodafone does a 3G version so they could be an option.

There is a hill not too far which gets 4G connection. So possibly a wireless relay of some sort can be used?

In any case (3G or 4G) the issue that i'm faced with is that Vodafone and Spark are refusing to provide service for the address that i give them. This address does not have road access and i suspect when they check it in their system they just get "no service".

I have identified the physical location of the property based on information supplied by the OP, and have confirmed the correct legal description of that land parcel with the council. This has led me to a valid street address (even though it is nowhere near a street). I have now applied to have this address validated in Spark's address management system, and once that is complete, the next step will be to add network characteristics to that address to see whether service is available.
