I've been watching the fibre rollout maps for indication when fibre is coming to my street, looks like Jan '18.

I live at the semi rural gravel end of what is otherwise a normal suburban street, with another 5 or so properties around. As soon as the houses get further apart, it appears that fibre will not be available.

The galling part about this is that the copper is not in the best shape, it says VDSL available but when I got that installed it was actually down 12 out of 24 hours every day, only up from 4:00 am to 4:00 pm.

I cant see that they will fix the copper when it finally fails.

I'd be happy to make a contribution to get fibre but Chorus help desk just don't want to know.

any suggestions?

Have you logged a fault for your VDSL?

If you want to pay to get fibre, you should call your ISP and ask them to run a NGA on application for you. You don't contact Chorus, as you're not their client.

Chorus quoted my ISP $84,000 for a NGA on Application. UFB fibre is deployed aerially from my side of the road to a house across the street from me.  They are 'in zone' so got it for free.  It would have taken an extra 20 meters of fibre to reach me so that's like $4000/meter after deducting manpower costs.

I logged a fault on VDSL , but the poor old Downers guy spent hours trying to work out what was wrong, and concluded that there must have been some interference being created along the cable length that caused the problem at particular times of the day, dodgy electric fence or something like that.

Thanks I'll contact my ISP and see what happens. As I said the rest of the street is scheduled for Jan '18, so would be good if they just continue the fibre run for another 200m or so to pick up the remaining subscribers.

looks like plan it all from google maps, it looks way different when you see it for real.

thanks for the advice

i'm due for ufb extension in Jan 18 now. (Balmoral, Auckland area).  In the meantime, I've got a Skinny Wireless broadband unit that i'm using for when i'm working from home (family still on the adsl). $52/month for 100GB.  I'm typically getting 20Mbps/40Mbps DL/UP and 35ms ping on the skinny wireless.

(Skinny on CGNAT so not so good if you need an IP address, but for my work stuff I don't have that need)

Chorus do these rollouts by cabinet/exchange area i'm told so it sort-of makes sense, but not on a street map.   They also don't really have crews to send back/elsewhere, I believe the demand outstrips the availability of the contractors.  They are also unlikely to change these rollout areas. I tried for 3 years to convince them, arguing - truthfully - that everyone in out street has <6mpbs ADSL, not the 10mbps+ they tried to claim and should be prioritized over areas where VSDL is available.  I went through several levels, no progress.

I think the main reason for an $84K NGoA quote was to deter me from ordering :-)

I wonder if you did a deal with your neighbours across the street to have it installed there and then once installed cut it and bring it to your place? Can probably find someone with a splicer etc.?

What about installing a long range WiFi product from your across the road neighbour's house to your house? You pay them so they can get a higher speed fibre connection. You'll still need copper for your phone line.

So do you have confirmation from Chorus that UFB won't be available at your property when it's installed in the street or are you simply assuming that?

Send an email to ruralbroadband@chorus.co.nz and advise them that you wish to get a quote for "NGA On Application". Tell them your address and any other relevant details.

Chorus will email you back with an estimated cost to get your house connected to the UFB network further up the road (assuming the network is already there and not just planned). Chorus will also give you an NOA number.

If you are happy with the estimate, you then contact your RSP and ask them to submit an NGA On Application install request with Chorus. Your RSP will need to include the NOA number with the application. Chorus will then complete the network design and provide a firm quote for the work to your RSP, who will relay this to you.

If and when you accept the quote, Chorus will begin network build, and the cost of the works will be billed to your RSP, who will pass the charges on to you.

[EDIT: Sorry I just realised the rest of the street is not due for UFB rollout until Jan 2018, therefore there is no point in contacting Chorus at the email address above at this time - the estimate will be WAY more than it could be once UFB is actually in your street]

The views expressed by me are not necessarily those of my employer Chorus NZ Ltd

Ouch. That's even worse than they wanted for my place, and there's no UFB at all on my street yet (2019), but it is available 300 metres away. All deployed on the power poles, too. If their quote weren't so excessive I'd have pulled the trigger.

They wanted around $25k for my place, when I was ~1100 m from the fibre-fed VDSL cabinet and ~600 m from where I think there was some other fibre (I decided to wait it out, and got the free install a couple of years later). $84k to cross the street sounds excessive...

The $84k may have been the cost to early build the network to @regs house, rather than just run a fibre across the road.

It was probably a special price just for me. My address is probably red flagged in their system 😝
