I am due to have UFB installed next week. Currently I have only signed up to the basic 100 down 20 up plan as I wanted to ask some GZ members first if gigabit is actually worth it since most of my traffic is international i.e. Google Apps, YT, online gaming, Apple Music & Twitch.

Are gigabit speeds actually obtainable for uploading and downloading from international servers?

Thanks!

Google and Apple and a lot of what you'd think are "international" companies actually have their servers in NZ and/or Sydney.

No one "needs" gigabit, it's just cool to have at this moment. Does your ISP allow you to change plan after a month? Just sign up for it and give it a try.

If you have lots of people in your house, then 1gig is worth it.

If its just you, then probably not.

I find it's worth it if you're sick of waiting for downloads from Steam/Origin.

Outside of that, there isn't a huge improvement in daily browsing for 1-5 people.  Netflix only needs under 20Mbps for 4K - so even 100Mbit is enough for 4-5 streams of 4K video simultaneously.

Like above, if its just yourself 100/20 is generally fine.

I have "Gigabit" myself only because we needed more than 20mbit upstream and the gigabit plans was the only option with my isp (wife and I do a bit of after hours work from home, fighting each other when syncing stuff to one drive is a bit annoying).

Gig UFB is fantastic on the same isp if you have a vpn etc with a freind, just rember the slowest point is the southern cross cable, And because of that 100/20 is fast enough for most people.

(I install fibre and every gig UFB i have tested isn't much faster than 100/20)

Thanks everyone for your replies I'll stick with 100/20 and see how that goes with want I want to do.

Yeah most of the international sources aren't enough to saturate your gigabit speeds anyway.

Battle.net tops out around 50MB/s

Origin does 55-60MB/s

PSN does around 30MB/s

Surprisingly FF14 servers did 100MB/s for me.

I get around 800Mbps to Origin, downloaded the sims 4 in 3 minutes, was incredible.

Xbox downloads are still average, 100Mbps connection would suffice.

Something is very wrong with their equipment or only testing on wifi....

My maths says this is over 9 times faster download and 26 times fast upload...

So yeah not that much faster...

Great use of sarcasm, but they probably meant "real world usage" rather than just a speedtest :-) Facebook and Youtube won't load faster on gigabit. Sure you can download the latest games from local mirrors in minutes compared to tens of minutes; but is it worth it? Don't know.. probably depends on the person, right?

The original post actually wrote "Are gigabit speeds actually obtainable for uploading and downloading from international servers?" so, that's something that nobody has really answered... how about download a copy of Ubuntu from mirrors in the US, Europe, and Australia: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+cdmirrors  ? It would be super interesting to know what results you get. Still, again, this is probably not real world usage.

BTW, I totally think its awesome to have gigabit and great for the country regardless,..
