Hi

What Service Provider would be the best one for me.

I want to experiment with a home server.

I am on Flip and they don't give IP addresses so they are out. Vodafone does but what do they thinik of home servers..

What do you want to do with the server? Why not just use a VPS?

I don't think any ISP which gives you a public IP address will restrict your use of a home server, although certain things may be against the ToS. You'd need to read the ToS of any provider to be sure. They might also restrict high-risk services like SMTP or DNS.

As per above, depending what you want to serve, a VPS might be better (and more cost-effective)

I'm with Voyager and they don't have an issue with my running a home server (domain, site,mail etc) with static IP. Vodafone are not cheap for a static IIRC - Voyager was a one off fee for mine.

Read fine print of T&C's regardless of what anyone says over the phone/email. I'll admit I didnt read Voyagers T&C fully, but did have confirmation from Seeby himself that he didnt have any issues with it ;)

Pretty much if someone is offering a static IP, then they should be ok with you running services at home, or else what else do they think people want with a static ?

https://linode.com offers better $5 virtual servers to play around with. I'm with BigPipe and have small things hosted from home but also have plenty of virtual servers scattered over the internet for bigger things.

There are several ISP's who will provide blocks of public (ie: world routable) IP addresses over ADSL, VDSL or UFB connections... but here is the deal:

1. Whatever you are doing must not result in issues for them. Do you really know what you are doing?

2. You will have to pay for this. If you are the type of user who shops around on price (Strongly implied by your choice of ISP), give up now. It's a business service and you will pay accordingly.

3. Get yourself a decent router. I personally like Cisco but there are probably others which will work for this.

Vultr have a cheaper plan if you're happy with half the RAM - US$2.50 per month for 20GB SSD, 1 CPU, 512MB RAM and 500GB of traffic in their Sydney datacentre. I've been with them for a couple of years (on a more expensive plan) and found them to be very good and being just across the pond is nice for transfer speeds.

You can do a lot with 512GB RAM. I have a t2.nano in AWS running MySQL, Nginx (5 website), and PHP. It's pretty easy to max it out, and you do have to configure MySQL carefully to keep memory usage down - low buffers and no performance schema. It costs me more than US$2.50 per month though, probably closer to $6-8 with disk and bandwidth, but I mess with all kinds of things on AWS fairly regularly, which contributes to the cost.

Do you want a static IP, or is a dynamic public IP OK? ADSL/VDSL/UFB? What's your budget and tolerance for crappy support? Do you need a phone line provided with the broadband?

Vultr is awesome, we have several customer sites hosted in their Sydney location. If you wanted hosting in NZ I'd recommend ransomit.com.au. If you have a budget of $0 and don't mind a complete lack of support and having to admin a tiny linux machine from scratch, there's always http://lowendspirit.com/locations.html. I run an Exchange Server at home and use BigPipe with a static IP over their UFB product. Never had any problems (apart from moving house kind of stuff).

One item to note - if your looking at getting data FROM your server to the outside world, it is limited by the upload speed of your plan.
