A row has flared up again over Spark's attempts to encourage broadband customers on to its own wireless network, and off Chorus' copper broadband network which Spark resells.

Network company Chorus paid for broadband testing company TrueNet to install Spark Wireless Broadband in 40 homes, half of which were in Auckland, explaining it wanted to see how Chorus' products "stacked up against the competition".

TrueNet managing director John Butt said its study indicated the performance of Spark Wireless Broadband varied considerably, often by time of day, and was "more comparable" to slower copper broadband connections and "considerably slower" than the fastest type of copper connection, VDSL.

Wonder how they selected the locations of places to put these 4g test connections, Perhaps ask staff who knows of places with crap service on their mobiles etc?

Suprised they dont make a deal out of the IP address problem, since that is an area where the fixed cellular products actually do suck for some people and dsl wins out over.

Well, the copper here isn't any faster. The previous occupants of this old rural house decided to forego a landline so the nice clean copper pair were taken away to provide for a new property further down the street. When we moved in and ordered a landline only a faulty cable pair was left, so we got that.

Approx 1.5km from the local distribution cabinet, a blistering 4653kbits/s down and 873kbits/s up. Of course we can't complain to Chorus because we're not their customer. 2degrees has to do it, and even though the Chorus tech admitted we were on a noisy pair, 2degrees refuses to lodge a complaint without us having to pay for the privilege.

There's a nice new(ish) cable laid about 1 metre away from the one we're on. It has spare pairs, but will they connect us to that one? No.

Sigh.

If your ISP won't help you, have you considered other ISPs?

This reflects my experience as an RBI user. Initially great speeds, then bottlenecks during holidays and generally slower since. Overall degraded performance.

What other choices do you have in regards ADSL2 and VDSL2 or other wireless providers.

I can't get VDSL where I am, and the Spark Wireless 4G was approx. 4 times faster than the ADSL I am currently on. However, their caps are very limited and insufficient for a regular streaming content user.

If they just offered uncapped wireless 4G I'd be making the switch.

I can't get ADSL2 or VDSL2 or fibre so I have no other choice (other than - cough - satellite). When I installed a second outdoor aerial on my B315 I got almost identical results to those in the video. I was a happy camper until the mast I depend on got overloaded with truants and it all went south. Of course, Vodafone doesn't tell you about that.
