Long story short...I've been using Lightwire rural wireless which is all fine but a pricey and a bit dicey in bad weather.

 

After finding a jack in my house with an ADSL label on it I decided to try my luck getting dsl connected.

 

Bigpipe seemed to think it was available and chorus apparently connected it on Friday.

 

So far no ADSL synch on any jack....looking under the house the wires all run to one point...as they should. However this appears to be such (demarc) point:

 

 

The digging is me looking for cables.  To the right is one of the septic tank valves...but the tank is fairly old so I can't imagine it was cut to put it in.

 

I guess at this point I should decide this trial run is a failure and stick rural wireless?

Anything before the demarc point is Chorus's responsibility. Ask your ISP to lodge a failed install for you with Chorus.

While technically this is true, I'd imagine it is only to the extent that there is indeed a bona fide fault on the Chorus network. In this case, the service lead is no longer connected to the ETP, but it clearly did not remove itself, ducting and all - there has been some human intervention which has caused it to vanish without a trace. It hasn't merely fallen to the ground below the ETP - it's apparently gone altogether. It seems highly unlikely that Chorus would have removed it for any reason, so it's likely that it was removed by a previous occupant of the property at some stage.

 

Clause 4 of the Chorus End User Terms states:

 

You must not interfere with any part of our network, even if it is on or within your premises; only people we authorise may work on our network.  If you interfere with our network, we have no responsibility of any kind to you for any failure or disruption in the services you obtain from a service provider.

 

I suspect in this case Chorus will seek to charge for the cost of supplying and installing a new service lead from the boundary of the property to the ETP, (unless they are able to locate the existing service lead in a usable state and reconnect it - again, for a fee).

What if someone had just ripped it out who was walking by? With some of the installs someone walking by could easily damage people fiber connections if they wished to do so. I would suggest anyone building get it all installed underground and up through the walls.

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

Been under yeah, can't see anything coming up from the ground.

Rather helpful reply for Bigpipe for a Sunday night:

 

Hi Matthew, thanks for the update.

The photo is quite helpful. From that it does appear that the service lead has gone missing, which is very, very odd, especially as it appears to have been under ground.

It is possible that there is still a cable in from the street to the address, but it might come in under the house, and from there head into the ETP/demarc. If this is the case we should be able to get this sorted with a visit from a Chorus technician. The address checker on our website checks whether there is service available in the street. It cannot know whether or not there is cabling from the street to the property, nor jackpoints and cabling within the property as the Chorus database does not supply this information.

If the Chorus technician finds that there is no service lead to the address, we won't be able to connect you I'm sorry, as we do not provide wiring as part of our connections. If this does turn out to be the case we'll refund your connection fee.

Sorry for the trouble on this one Matthew. We'll be in touch as soon as we have a confirmed date a technician will be around. Please keep your phone with you and turned on in the mean time.
