Hey everyone, I've just moved from an old house with gigabit cable to my new place with vdsl while we wait for fibre. However after getting it installed today the speeds are pretty terrible (10 down, 1 up tested with ethernet to hamilton server).

Unfortunately from not having VDSL before I'm a little clueless on what I can do about it.

Here are my line stats (on Voyager btw)

VDSL Port Details Upstream Downstream
Line Rate: 1.029 Mbps 12.056 Mbps
Actual Net Data Rate: 1.006 Mbps 12.011 Mbps
Trellis Coding: ON ON
SNR Margin: 9.5 dB 9.1 dB
Actual Delay: 7 ms 8 ms
Transmit Power: 10.5 dBm 18.6 dBm
Receive Power: 0.9 dBm 0.3 dBm
Actual INP: 1.0 symbols 0.0 symbols
Total Attenuation: 9.8 dB 18.3 dB
Attainable Net Data Rate: 1.011 Mbps 12.045 Mbps
============================================================================
VDSL Band Status U0 U1 U2 U3 D1 D2 D3
Line Attenuation(dB): 16.4 N/A N/A N/A 31.2 102.3 N/A
Signal Attenuation(dB): 16.4 N/A N/A N/A 29.9 N/A N/A
SNR Margin(dB): 9.5 N/A N/A N/A 9.1 N/A N/A
Transmit Power(dBm): 10.5 N/A N/A N/A 18.6 N/A N/A

Thanks a bunch for any help/thoughts/whatever ya feel!

When are you getting fibre and do you have a master filter installed?

I believe we don't have a master filter although I'm not entirely sure. Our fibres getting installed end of May, so not too far away but will be a bit painful because we are a flat of 4 super heavy users haha so want to do something if possible.

Signal Attenuation(dB): 16.4 N/A N/A N/A 29.9 N/A N/A

Your signal attenuation is very high. This usually means a long distance from your house to the cabinet. It could also mean a house wiring issue.

When you ask for VDSL from your ISP, did they check the line attenuation and tell you whether you are likely to get a reasonable VDSL performance?

Yeah i thought that might be the case :( they didn't check anything or let us know what the projections were above what it says on their website which is just the "up to 70" stuff.

Will have to give them a call tomorrow and sort something out I guess.

I would try a new Master Filter. See if that improves things. It could bypass wiring problems on your property. Like phone lines crossing power making lots of electrical noise, poor terminations, and either old copper OR Poorly Wired copper.

If not then maybe ADSL2+ could possibly work better.

DLM should get introduced onto the ADSL network as well as VDSL DLM being tweaked soon. So ADSL2 might be better. It won't do wonders for your upload, but you might get a few meg better on the download.

I'll have a look into it but I get the feeling it'll probably be too expensive for us because of being students and stuff. Will talk to the ISP as well and see what we can sort out.

Bonus sick speed test for you guys
