Apologies if this is more basic than i am envisaging but bear with me if you may.

I am currently in a flat with my brother who works for telecom and we get the 'free' internet and phone that being an employee entitles you to. Whilst this is all well and fancy good i have come to despise the telecom internet service and will typically get 1/2 to 1/4 of the advertised line speed and can't update steam ever for some reason. (i presume it has something to do with packet shaping)

All of this has then led me to want to move to another provider and if i must, pay for it all on my own.

What i want to know is:
1. Can i just have an Xnet (or equivalent) BB plan without any phone service whatsoever into the house? We don't use the phone at all and all have our respective cell phones so no phone at all would be fine.

2. I don't want a full upload speed plan as it's not necessary for us so i would like to know if i can get an xnet (or equivalent) river data plan (FLS Down/128 Up) and then at some point in the future (or straight away) get the VOIP service as an extra. Therefore having 20GB of River for $54.43 and then the $12 or whatever it was for the VOIP service later. This seems like a better deal for us than the Fusion plan.

3. If no to above, with the Xnet Fusion plan at $69.95 p/m this does not include any data correct? Just the FLS up/down $1.02/GB fee on top so 20GB of data plus the phone would end up being ~$90 p/m

So fundamentally, can i have a FLS Down/128 Up 20GB plan (with an option to increase data) with no phone line whatsoever in a house that currently has Telecom phone and internet?

Thanks in advance.

Naked DSL plans on the market in New Zealand only seem to have Full Speed both download and upload...

Also in that table you an see which plans have VoIP included as part of it (Xnet Fusion has it pre-included), and yes, the Fusion doesn't include any data in the 69.95 price.

Thanks for the tables, they're a nice comparison.

From what i understand, i have to buy a Naked plan to be able to just have internet without a telephone even though the Naked services all seem to provide VOIP in their price. Correct?

To have Internet without the Phone Line rental charge - yes.

Actually most of the Naked DSL plans don't have VoIP - look carefully (at the table).

Yeah, sorry, bit of a brain fart there, no VOIP on most of them. Damn writing emails and replying to threads on the last day of the week is hard at the moment. :P

I recommend checking the link above. Fusion is fs-fs, there isn't a 128kbps upload option.

You'll find that with fs-128kbps connections, you'll never near the maxmium speed. It maxes out around 3-4mbps. Upgrading to full speed fixes that.

Keep in mind that you do need the wiring in place to support a second line (if you intend to keep the first intact), if it isn't in place you'll need it installed.

cokemaster: Yeah i saw that there was no 128k option for the fusion, i just didn't want to pay for full up and down if i could help it. Looks like i'll be heading over to either xnet or orcon purple when i convince the others it's worth it.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.
