So a few towns over someone drilled through the fibre line resulting in lost cell coverage, no internet, eftpos etc. for most of last night.

Question: Why was our Skinny (Spark) cell phone still able to ring out (albeit much degraded signal)? My best guess is cell towers for calls and data would also depend on the fibre line but maybe old tech kicked in when the fibre died? Two Degrees phones and Vodafone phones were reported to not be working during the outage.

Can someone explain to me how cell phones and cell data work in relation to the fibre line?

What do you know that I don't

I had to drive past Kaiapoi to switch cell sites to get data, before checking here as the VF mobile and 2Degrees Fibre status was BAU.. Yet PPoE carked it about 640am and hasn't been back since.

That's the one... Ohope digger dug up the fibre in Ohope apparently.

Anyone know how calling on a cell phone relates to data and voice when the fibre line is cut? Seems odd I could get a call out on the spark network.

We were on secondary coverage. So only basic voice while data was down.

Be similar case for you I suspect. Backup trunks over copper or microwave I suspect

The network as such has smarts and the surrounding cells appear to expand (thats whay its called Cellular) as such taking up the space of the missing cell (if they can ) but that will most likely only give up fringe coverage hense poor speech no data - in same areas along with the high traffic fibre there is also limited DMR ( Microwave ) links between cells or to an integration point

I dont get into billing but I would suspect something like 130+GST per vehicle & 130+GST per Tech per hr + materials + civils contractor time (if doer dosent want to sort out treenching (network fibre is not normaly jointed closer than 200m apart to allow for joint test proving) in other words no bloody cheep

its a lot cheaper to get it located and a standover done than take the risk and miss.
