With Spark.

Had fibre connected for about 2 months.

On the connection day and again when testing now (2 months later) I am only getting 91/16 readings. This is with Wifi turned off in the HG659b router and with a LAN cable of 1m in length plugged directly into router. I also conducted the test using both the Speedtest desktop app and the the Spark linked Speedtest via a browser tab.

The Chorus technician (Vision stream) who did the installation said (at the time we both tested the speeds when he completed the installation) that we should be getting 100/20 as a minimum. He had an app on his phone that he is required to use to test his splices (all readings were within tolerance) and the results of those tests get sent to Chorus. But he also said the app showed him other statsitices, one of which he said showed that Chorus had the power set too high on the splitter output at the exchange. He said if Chorus lowered that our Speedtests would acheive 100/20.

He further advised that Chorus should fix this when he submits his app results as they will see the issue from his readings, but 2 months later it has not changed.

So should I be expecting 100/20 as per what I signed up with Spark for?

Needless to say Spark want nothing to do with this. They will not even let me email them my Speedtests results and nor will they contact Chorus to ask them about what their technician said. Spark said they consider they are honouring the product they sell if a customer gets anywhere from 50% to 80% of the promoted speed rate of 100/20 - really, WTF!

Chorus tech is making things up as usual.

If you're getting 90 instead of 100, I'd check your home equipment first.

What color is the LAN light on the ONT?

What model is the network card in your computer? What speed is it connected at?

So you are on a 100 / 20 plan and you were told these were minimum speeds by a tech?

Rolls eyes and thinks WTF

LAN1 on ONT is Orange

Network card is Atheros AR8152/8158 PCI-E (NDIS 6.20) Driver 2.1.0.16 ver 1/4/2013. I will check what speed it is connected at when I next hook up the LAN as I normally only connect over wifi.

Was at my Olds yesterday they are on 100/20 UFB
Speedtest.net reported 90/16Mbps
So I guess you get 10% less than you pay for, wonder if you paid 10% less would ISP say oh well that's normal UFB :)

Correct, that is what the tech said.

Interestingly when I had my chat with Spark and they advised me of their 'acceptable level' of delivery of the service for 100/20 I said well the product is called Fibre 100/20, not 'up to 100/20' and advised them they should be mindful of the Fair Trading Act.

In addition I said to Spark, send me the T&C's I signed up to that said Spark could deliver as low as 50% of the stated speeds and still be deemed acceptable. The CS rep went away to find the T&C's and then came back and said well actually their T&C's don't say that, but that is what they deem acceptable!

Thanks for the specs. It shows that there problem is that your network card is too cheap to handle the speeds. If that 10 Mbps is that important to you, you can go and buy a network card that supports gigabit ethernet and install it in your computer.

Just to throw a spanner in the works.

I am on a 100/20 plan in Christchurch with the much maligned MyRepublic, and haven't had a speedtest below 105/21 for months. This is at any time of the day.

Chch is Enable, not Chorus.

Enable have slightly more relaxed policers than Chorus do, so that doesn't surprise me.

I have investigated well into double digit fibre faults where people have sworn black and blue it's their ISP with poor speed. I've yet to find an example where it wasn't the customer devices that wasn't the issue. Granted if you have a Huawei HG630 that could be the issue but if it's a recent connection you should have a HG659.

Buy an ODroid C2 and install Android on it and run the Android speedtest tool on there. I can guarantee it will be your hardware.

^ And that's how it should be. Our fibre networks are actually pretty god. If you buy 100/20 then you should get 100/20. That is, if your computer is good enough to handle it.

So extrapolating that .... I am only getting 91/16 approx, so that means therefore it is my own hardware limiting the speed as another poster suggested above.

Therefore does that mean if I changed my plan with Spark to 200/20 I would still only get 91/16 if I leave my hardware the same?

91/16 is good, stop worrying about unimportant things. The extra speed that you'll never get in practice makes no practical difference.

I get 94/17.5 in a Wellington suburb. There's probably some protocol overhead or something, plus latency reduces maximum speed.

Run two speed tests at the same time and add them together, I get about 107/22 when I do that. My best guess is latency to the test server reduces my maximum speed, even though it's only 3ms latency. Try downloading an Ubuntu 16.04 torrent.

Relaxed policy - in what way are Enable more relaxed.

I have a HG659b router - latest firmware according to Spark website.

Thanks for that.

I will try the same test using my son's very modern desktop computer with a LAN connection when he gets home in a week or so.
