So I just had a call from domainz.net.nz offering me the opportunity to secure a .kiwi domain that matched a .co.nz domain I had. I was a bit surprised, but figured out that they had bought it/reserved it or something, and this sounded like a reseller type offer so I asked.. "So this is a sales call to try and sell me a .kiwi domain you are sitting on that matches my .co.nz one?"... "Yes"

Full marks for honesty at least I guess.

I then thought I would quickly check to see when my .co.nz expires (It's one I am maintaining so my mum has a real email address)  and it is later this year so I checked the price of my current registrar (Domains4less) and it was $19.xx / year.

Then I checked domainz.net.nz and they want $52.89/year for a .co.nz... I'm not dumb but I can't see what they are offering that justifies 2.5 times the price of another registrar... What am I missing?

Oh, I told them I wasn't interested in the .kiwi domain... The sales guy seemed surprised but I hung up before he started on the sales pitch.

Cheers -N

Domainz is owned by Melbourne IT, one of the first companies authorised to sell domain names around... Having said that I would not buy from them and not at their prices.

For anyone looking for a good local registrar, metaname.co.nz is the answer.

I don't think you are missing anything.

I had a domain with them from back when they were basically the only game in town.

Their website has been prettied up a few times but their domain name management interface was still from the dark ages last time I used it.

I jumped ship before .nz went live.

I had a similar call from Domains4less (probably) yesterday actually with a similar pitch offering to sell the .kiwi version of our .nz...

Some of our customers have reported this to us, the domain provider had already secured the domain name and were trying to offload it for a huge profit.

Can't say I have or never will have this sort of rubbish from Metaname. I think it is a disgusting thing to do.

I've got 2 names spread across 6 (soon to be 8) TLD's. 4 with CrazyDomains, 2 with GoDaddy and 2 pre-registered with CrazyDomains. Just had a wee look, both generic names are still available as a .kiwi (I'm not interested in this TLD) so I guess I won't be getting any phone calls anytime soon :-)

Dirty behaviour from Domainz though, IMO.

Metaname looks good, shame I didn't know about them a month ago. Think I might transfer everything over to them when I'm close to renewal, depending on what my renewal prices are going to be with my current providers.

You won't lose anything even if you transfer now nor will it cost you.

I moved everything that's not .com to Metaname. Also they support DNSSEC and when Cloudflare implemented it using a specific algorithm Metaname updated their own to match what I needed. Very good service. I doubt Domainz would even move a finger in something as techie as that...

Domainz is really just a telemarketing company and has been for some time. In fact, I think they recently shut their Wellington office in favour of running everything including outbound sales to Melbourne.

I'm glad it's not just me at least... I did mention in passing, but I should be explicit, I have never dealt with domainz.net.nz... They called me using the contact details against the .co.nz domain name. It's currently registered with domains4less.

The price alone is enough of a reason for me to steer clear, let alone the borderline ransommey behaviour.

Cheers - N

Tied in with domains4less? My domain is with d4l (who still claim to be NZ based..) but registrar appears to be registrar_name: Umbrellar Limited t/a Domain Agent

Webdrive Who have locked in the .kiwi. appear to list as the same :/

Many of these domain companies do appear to now be overseas owned, or have part overseas shareholders..
