Hey guys,

wanting to recruit a few people who're using ISPs that use CG NAT and don't have public IPs allocated to test out something for me - I've got a feeling I've found a bit of a hole in Bigpipe's network setup, and just need some verification, so I'm looking for a couple of Bigpipe customers, and a couple of non-Bigpipe customers (I think Voyager, definitely Flip, maybe Orcon now?, MyRepublic, Trustpower) to try something nice and simple - connecting to my Mumble server.

If my theory's correct, something to do with how Bigpipe's CGNAT is setup is blocking my mate from joining my Mumble server (which is hosted on my Bigpipe connection with a public static), which was working fine for him with a previous ISP (Vodafone, the horror). Bigpipe is who I recommended to him, and by and large it's been seamless, however if something this mundane is an issue that they can only resolve for a payment of $45 (which the flattie definitely won't be keen on, or probably even allow), it's a bit of a show stopper.

I had issues going between 2 bigpipe connections when one was CGNAT and the other was a proper IP address for VPN and also a portfowarded CCTV in the past. It was solved with a proper IP on the second connection.

could relate to some inter-subnet routing then.

Has this been raised to the network team at BP?

Don't know about Rich's, but mine has, and they've offered to pop on a public IP to test with, just got to get the account holder to email in for that, which is fine, but then suggested that if that "fixes" the issue, that they'll need to pay the $45 for a public static, which is really a bandage over a network issue, rather than a resolution.

Doubly strange is that in desperation I setup a PPTP VPN and he's able to connect to that just fine, so the temporary work around is to use the VPN to add him to the local network, join the server from the internal address, and then proceed as intended. Not ideal, obviously, as it means a hop from Hamilton to Auckland, a hop from Auckland to me, and then another hop from me out to the wider world for any traffic that ISN'T to the mumble server.

I'll see what happens when the public static is set on his end for verification, but I'm pretty confident that it'll sidestep the issue, which will then just leave us with the task of actually resolving the issue.

AFAIK Voyager and Orcon should not be on your list.

That's super interesting - maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree then, but colour me shocked. I'll have to try flashing his router firmware to the Bigpipe version - anyone happen to know how involved that might be to get the hg669 from Vodafone to Bigpipe software?

Assuming HG669 is actually HG659 - that's exactly what I have. I've flashed a Vodafone HG659 with the BigPipe Firmware. It was pretty easy, the headache was that I had to reset everything to defaults. In fact, I found it didn't work until I had reset to defaults after the firmware upgrade. Note that the usernames and password are different after the firmware change too.

100% confirm - Voyager only provides public address space to retail customers.

I didn't realise but I signed up a static IP on my parents account. Was $20 once off from memory.
