Chorus have just put UFB down our shared drive and the job is in my view terrible. The cut down the drive is approx 15mm wide and 1.5cm to 2cm deep and not consistent and is about 25cm into the driveway and running across a vehicle cross over. At some points the cable was above the driveway level. They have just advised that the reinstatement is complete. They have basically dumped some loose asphalt into the cut but it is not flush and in places lease a 5-10mm lip which will break up. In the vehicle cross over they dumped some concrete grout which will last about a week at most. They have left a fence broken and at the street they have left the neighbours place and  the share driveway in a mess.

Points.

1 If our drive ever needs replacing how do we deal with  cable that is not even halfway as deep as the drive?

2. Rain will soon clear out their patch leaving exposed cable.

3. The crossover will break with in a few days leaving the cable exposed.

4. The lip left along the cut will break up and damage the driveway.

5. All this has taken over two months and they have not done a professional job.

6. the asphalt used is too dry and is already after a few days being washed out and blown out.

Is this normal to lay cable down a driveway only millimetres below the surface and then use a fill technique is way less than amateur. When Downers laid HFC they used a mole and only had two guide holes and that job is still sound after 10 years, this effort by Chorus will be lucky to see out spring.

Here is a pic of the cable I will try to upload some of the "reinstated" pics

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

That's pretty grim I have to say. I would raise it through you RSP and ask them for an escalation timeframe. Ask a Installers supervisor to come onsite and review the job.

Having said that, I'd take an ugly install over no fibre every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Sadly that job is pretty standard now.

However the fill should have at least been Sealant rather than ashphalt.

Minimum bury levels do not count in hard surfaces so there isn't really much you can go back on (based on Chorus standards).

It would definitely be worth contacting your RSP and getting them to raise the re-instatement issue though.

 Hey Mike,

Doesn't look like you've had the greatest experience here, just FYI, slot trenching is standard method of install, in saying that, the trench should have been filled correctly once the install was completed.

If you do need to replace your driveway you can simply contact Chorus to arrange a network move. A team will come out, pull up the network, set up a temp service and place ducting under the new driveway. (some costs involved)

Feel free to send me a PM with your address and I'll take a look at your install in more detail. If you can post the pictures of the reinstatement work that would be helpful. I look forward to hearing from you.

Mike

Definitely got cause on the re-instatement!

Contact your RSP and get them to raise it with their Rep for fastest resolution. EDIT: or just PM them above :)

If you send them these photos they should action straight away.

As for the cut and depth, probably not too much they'll do.

Standard Chorus install from an installer who wouldn't know a concrete saw from a GIB saw.

It's like they don't even get they could ping a string line, or even just use some timber as a guide. And then watching them actually handle the saw's is both entertaining and scary at the same time.

Unfortunately it's what happens when you pay peanuts for what is relatively skilled work.

Keep us posted Mike as to progress.

I would sooner stick with FibreX than have this mess on my shared driveway.

and

more importantly how is speed now and what ISP did you choose?

I am not connected yet the Fibre is still bundled up by the fence they broke. Haven't even trenched to our home yet. So hmm reinstatement is said to be complete the fibre has over 10 meters to go.

I have just been sent an appointment time for the internal connect. Problem. The Fibre has not reached out house yet. There is 10+ meters to run underground to the nearest point to install an external terminal.
