Having been offered the usual "free" deal by Spark...

Enable put my street duct in a very silly place, and to use it will mean slotting the driveway (which is shared), both across and length ways.

However right next to (20cm) the street duct is the termination for the current POTS wiring. Enable tell me, in ChCh only, they cannot touch or use Chorus wiring, cannot use it as a draw wire etc.

Has anyone else faced this, and is there any way around this ?

To be clear - Enable is not owned by Chorus.

From wikipedia:

Enable Networks Limited, trading as Enable, is a company based in Christchurch, New Zealand that installs a fibre broadband network in Christchurch and surrounding towns, and acts as a wholesaler for retail service providers (RSPs). It is fully owned by Christchurch City Holdings (CCHL), the investment arm of the Christchurch City Council.

It's not just Enable, and it's not just Christchurch - The only company with permission to use/remove Chorus-owned ducting/network is Chorus themselves. Enable, Ultrafast Fibre Ltd and Northpower have no agreement with Chorus and therefore they must install their own ducting in the areas where they provide fibre services.

I am sure many people have faced this over the last few years. There is no way around it.

In my case, they slotted across the start of the driveway, and then slotted the garden bed next to the shared driveway to get to the building (they didn't slot up the length of the driveway surface itself). Is this a possibility? Unfortunately building a new network retrospectively will invariably involve compromises.

What @Linux meant is that "Of course Enable can't [use the existing duct/network] as [the existing duct/network] is owned by Chorus"

They own the copper network right up to the external termination box on your house, regardless of who installed it. The home owner owns all internal house wiring. You'll probably find that Chorus even supplied the duct to your builder in the first place (as it has to be Chorus spec'd green comms ducting).

Nope - 17 years ago, long before Chorus existed. I know they inherited the old gear.

Yeah, that is correct in a Chorus area....it's a bit of an annoying situation. if that was my nice driveway they were going to cut up in that situation, I'd be annoyed too.

Spark should have said "Take out....replace with" unless you are in an area where Chorus are being difficult, or stand by what you offer. (the Spark salesman said directional drilling was an option)

@ChorusNZ are not been difficult they own the network up to the ETP so no other company / person is allowed to remove / modify or do anything to the Chorus network unless authorised by Chorus

What if the OP signed up to bigpipe? Whata conundrum that would be because Enable still wouldnt be able to use the 'chorus pipe' given Enable is the LFC.
