Forgive me if this is a simple answer, just can't seem to figure out the category or search terms I'm looking for.

If I wanted to set up a service where I'm selling VPS's where clients have their own ip, which services is that sold under? i.e what do I google?

I see there's "business broadband" but unless I'm mistaken that's merely internet for businesses not hosters.

Thanks

I'm talking about being a host, not buying a host, I can see how my message may have been unclear.

You want to setup/resell VPS services but have not explored the product to know what to search for?

Sounds like you might need to experience what having/running a VPS is before trying to resell them

You may want to look into hosting with OpenVZ or XEN or KVM depending on the container platform you want and SolusVM to manage it as that is a popular hosting platform.

Edit: Added a few more options.

I wanted to see what the bottom-line cost is to run such a service before investing thousands of hours researching every aspect of being a VPS host only to find out "oh hey, it's not even a viable business model for my market segment because the initial cost is prohibitively high". It makes sense to find out how much it costs to buy wood before you research becomimg a wood salesman.

Thank you. I'll try rephrase again, If i hosted one of the above mentioned services on my own server I obviously couldn't do it on my retail fiber connection, so which internet service would I be paying for?

You would need co-lo hosting for a start. Maybe that should be the first thing you look at. Many co-lo providers will have multiple upstream options and you would be able to get your IP address space from them.

I'm not sure you are going to find a comprehensive step by step guide to help formulate a costing model.

Reselling a VPS as a white label solution might be best as it will normally remove most if not all of the technical maintenance requirements. Beyond that you would need to factor in normal business over heads and marketing. Without having your on in-house experience you will need to rely heavily on external support companies etc further reducing your possible profits.

What particular angle do you think your VPS service could provide to stand out against the big and small vendors already?

Search for these things:

  • "what is VPS"
  • "difference between OpenVZ XEN KVM"
  • "how to setup a server with KVM"
  • "what is colocation"
  • "what is a server rack"
  • "cost of colocation NZ"
  • "cost of colocation USA"
  • "cost of colocation AU"
  • "best servers for virtualization 2018"
  • "cost of server"
  • "cost of business liability insurance"
  • "should I host web-server at home?"
  • "what is a network router"
  • "cost of internet connection at datacentre"

Then call it a day and head to the pub. If you're serious about this, you don't need to ask the question, you could easily find the info out on your own.

When we started out, we rented a tiny office with a hi-wall aircon, and a Chorus 100/100 Fibre connection and put a rack in it with servers and ran Hyper-V (Not recommended by the way).

The easiest way to get started is to rent dedicated servers, or co-location and then use something like SolusVM. Transit (bandwidth) may be extra or may be included depending on who you go with.

I'd highly suggest having knowledge about what you want to do before you start though - get a cheap dedicated server from somewhere (Search WebHostingTalk or LowEndBox) and try experimenting with different configs and see if it works for you.

Is this an academic only exercise? Or are you serious about starting your own web hosting company?

As if the later, you will effectively be competing against both Microsoft and Amazon plus lots of smaller companies.

A bit easier if you are already an ISP. As web hosting needs lots of upload bandwidth, wile a ISP needs lots of download bandwidth. So you can run both from the same connections.

But the ISP market is also really low margin.
