As per the subject line, i was hoping i could place the ONT in center of the house on the 2nd level. Is this possible / reasonable request to make when discussing with the Chorus technicians on where to put the ONT?
Ah awesome! I guess i'll ask and fingers crossed!
If you absolutely want this to happen;
1: Go & buy some good beer and put it in the fridge.
2: Walk around your house and locate where the existing copper cable for your phone line comes into the house, you will know you have found it when you locate the plastic ETP box on the side of the house.
3: Measure how far it is from the ETP to where you want the ONT installed.
4: Go down to MasterTrade, JR Russell, Corys, Stewarts, or any reputable electrical wholesaler and purchase the required length of OptiC@t cable. Note: OptiC@t is a hybrid Cat6 & Fibre cable designed specially for this situation.
5: Run the OptiC@t cable from the ETP to the point in the house where you want the ONT installed, being careful to leave a minimum of 1.5 metres free at each end (for stripping back the fibre and lacing up on cable tray). If you pass the cable through a wall and need to have a bend, make sure the bend radius is greater than 50 mm. (A really tight bend will compress - or worse still break- the fibre, rendering it useless).
6: When the installer comes they can fusion-splice the fibre at the ETP, install the ONT where you want it and (if you are taking a landline phone service over fibre) connect your existing telephone cabling (at the ETP) to the ATA port on the ONT or RGW (whichever applies in your case).
7: Take a cool beer from the fridge and marvel at your magnificence . . . .
